Any Tennesseans?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello fellow Tennessean! I am already in medical school but PM me if you want to chat...I ended up in an out of state school...lived in TN for eight years so I did not grow up there but sure liked it!

I B in Memphis right now.

No, going to Emory, but deferred til next fall. Working a cubicle job during the day, pizza kitchen at night, TN football games on the weekends (even the upper part of FF was on their feet the whole FL game), and leaving for Australia in 6 weeks.

How is the app process going?

Tennesseean right here. The name of the game is price tag + location. Odds are that I'll be attending school in either Tennessee or Alabama (and not Vandy).

Sign me up as another Tennesseean =P

No interviews, no news other than a rejection at Vandy. It took some time for my profs to get my letters of rec in, though, so I didn't expect to get bombed with interviews.

word

UTMEM is pretty slow with the interviews it seems. They just sent me an email last week saying I am complete when I got everything in in early august.

Rather than telling you my story, it may be easier just to post this
My Story on MDapplicants

I interviewed yesterday at ETSU. If I get in there, it will be near impossible to turn them down. That is where I've always wanted to go.

Really? Why ETSU? Are you interested in Family Medicine?

A number of reasons. I have always thought I would be a small town do, probably family medicine. My wife and I have always wanted to settle down in that area. Just gorgeous! It is a bit closer to our family. The cost of living is great! Small class size, close-knit community, great opportunities in the clinicals. You aren't competing with a bunch of other students (only 60 in a class) or residents like some other big schools. If you choose one of the rural sites (1 hour away), you get tons of hands on experience. The docs are a lot more open to giving you more opportunities.

Of course, all my knowledge is second hand but these are things I've heard. Yep, there has been little doubt in my mind. However, I'm not closed to the option of going elsewhere just yet. I'm just "already sold" on ETSU. If I'm accepted, they won't have to work hard to get me to come there.

i interviewed at etsu on monday. im in the same boat as geronimo, it will be hard for me to turn them down if i get in there. my entire family lives in the area, i dont like memphis, and it will be much cheaper than private school elsewhere.

Quillen is great! Good luck to you all. 🙂

Any out there in Tennessee? What choices are you making for med school?

Hey, I am from Memphis and went to school at Quillen. I love Memphis and I enjoyed my time "in the mountains." Great school. Great atmosphere. I was well trained. Class size is small, so you have a better one on one relationship with your faculty. Although the school is known primarily for it's Primary Care/Family Medicine, I choose to do general surgery. I am in a general surgery residency at a much larger academic institution and I feel that Quillen prepared me well. I sometimes miss the "twang" of that East TN accent. Good luck with interviews for medical school.

Ok, so I'm an Oregonian, not a Tennesseean. BUT, I interview on October 4th at ETSU, which I think is amazing considering I'm not only out of state, but WAY out of state. It's my #2 choice (behind my state school). I like the idea of the smaller class size, and their focus on rural care.

I plan on flying in to Tri-Cities Airport (I think). Is that the closest airport?

You guys are nuts, you couldnt pay me to live in Johnson City 😛 😱

I dunno, Johnson City is about the same size as the city I live in now, and I love it! I guess I'm just a little bit country. 😛

I grew up somewhere smaller than Johnson City and couldn't imagine living in a rural area again. Knoxville is as small as I go city-wise.

Well, to each their own then. 🙂 For most of my life, I lived in a town of 3500 people, so 50,000 to me is decent sized.

UT Memphis rocks...I got to hang out at the med and began to learn to suture my first or second weekend here. Something I didn't know...there is no EM residency program here...that means med students do tons.

UT is extremely supportive of its students...it's a great place to be. Good luck to all of you applying.

Adios, folks, I won't be back for a looong time.

Hey all, just giving you guys the heads up, I got an interview today at UT-Memphis but it came to my PERMANENT ADDRESS. So you guys might want to call home if you registered it as the permanent address.

I am up here at APSU.
Med school is still a couple of years away. I have a dilemma though. I only have Vandy and Meharry as my ONLY two options. I have 4 children under 5 right now and my husband has a great job in Nashville and we don't really have the option of uprooting and going somewhere for med school.

Oh and another thing. I was talking with someone about acceptance to Vandy from APSU and only 1 person has made it that far and he/she went to Mayo instead. I have a great GPA but wondering what I can do that will make me stand out more??? I thought about transfering to Vandy during my undergrad but I am not sure that move will be good. But I did see that Vandy pulled like 90+ students from their undgrads for the first class. None from my school of course and the others were ivy leaguers (big surprise there! Ha Ha!)

When I interviewed there, I got the impression that they are REALLY big on research. They introduce this new emphasis program that all new medical students have to participate in... basically they have to pursue a creative project like... (big surprise) research! =)

Also, it seems they have a thing for good MCAT scores, their average MCAT score is pretty high (~11 on each section according to the MSAR).

Goodluck, I hope you get in!

MSAR says that their avg MCAT stats are: VR9, PS10, BS10...I had someone there tell me the same...hmmm that is weird. Also, someone I know there says that they are big into people with real hands-on clinical experience, not just volunteering. 😕

I am a little confused...you got an interview invite from them today and you have already interviewed there...

Where the heck are you supposed to get hands-on clinical experience when you are not a med student or dr or nurse??
I have had experience in the rescue squad but gosh that was 13 years ago!!!
I am volunteering/shadowing in our ED and I get some hands on stuff not too sure what they will be looking for.

I got an interview invite from UT-Memphis today, I did the vandy interview a few weeks ago.

You might be right about the avg mcat scores, I'm using an MSAR from 2 years ago (someone gave it to me hehe).

hey ornotmajestic - one of my classmates is from rural Washington. She's really happy with ETSU (once in a while she'll have a "in Seattle..." moment 🙂 ); if you're interested in rural health, it's definitely the way to go. Even if you're not, the reasonably-happy student body and fabulous support staff make ETSU a great place to spend 4 years. and JC isn't all that bad...if you're into outdoorsy stuff, it's great! And if you really felt the need to leave for a while, a year of absence is not difficult to get - if you have a good reason. I'm in Botswana right now. Best of luck with the interview! Ask around for KKW if you want to talk to a fellow Northwesterner - she's a 2nd year. TRI is the closest airport, but carry around ~$30 for a cab. You'd get a cheaper airfare if you fly into Knoxville or Nashville, but that would require a lot more stress-inducing manuvering to make it out to JC.
Dakotaman - miss you and the rest of the class! 🙂 I'm definitely not missing path though...

Thanks, Manta. 🙂

I ended up renting a car, because it was a whole lot cheaper and easier than a cab. Taking advantage of the "over the age of 25" thing!! 🙂

I am interested in rural medicince, and I enjoy outdoorsy stuff, so I'm pretty sure I'd be reasonably happy with JC. We shall see as I fly out Saturday!!

Where in Australia are you visiting? It's pretty nice here, once you get here you may not want to leave. 🙂

So, I got a letter in the mail from ETSU today - it was thin.

At out interview (10 days ago) we were told, you will either hear you are rejected or waitlisted (but not accepted until after October 15th).

So, I was concerned 🙁 when I saw ETSU on the return address. I was waitlisted. From what I hear, ETSU loves to do this. Anyone else waitlisted? Anyone else been through this in past years where you got waitlisted this early and then let in?

Hmmm...now I'm a bit worried. My interview is Monday and I fly out tomorrow. Now i'm gonna be a bit paranoid.

I was placed on the "hold" list as well. I interviewed about 2 weeks ago.

I was placed in the "hold" category at ETSU also..I interviewed the 16th of September. Loved the place...hope to get an acceptance soon.

Just became an honorary member of the ETSU "hold" club as well. 😀

OrnotMajestic said:
Wow, this is encouraging.

What you have to remember is, they cant accept until oct 15. Plus the way ETSU does their admissions, they might decide to lower the "number" grade on applications and accept a whole group in a month. Only 60 kids get in as well. Just be happy you are not one of the 42 who have been rejected!

i am on hold as well. interviewed 9/20.

lol, fellow tennesseeian here!! I am a late bloomer and just submitted my amcas yesterday 😱 Memphis is my #1 choice!! I went on rounds with a neurosurgen all summer at LaBoneur and absolutley loved it!!

Anyone hear any horror stories about turning in the amcas this late with UTmem?

I'm guessing that "waitlist" is more of a "hold-list" given that they can't offer acceptances till October 15th. Mr. Taylor spoke about this on interview day (I remember vaguely) but I tuned out for some reason for about 15 seconds. Rats! Has anyone "not heard anything" since being interviewed or did everyone receive the same waitlist? Or perhaps a rejection?

Hey Geronimo, I went to Lee for 3 semesters back in 98-99. I was an intercultural studies major and almost went to China, but withdrew from school the semester before I was supposed to go. Now I'm in medschool in DC in the Army. I sometimes wonder what my life would be like now if I would have stuck it out at Lee.

Sweet! I loved Lee. In fact, my wife and I are always going back with the alumni stuff. I've taught a couple of "sessions" there since leaving. It is a great school and really growing. I was an intercultural studies major as well before switching to language. I needed to focus on something other than medicine for few years while my wife finished law school. She went to Vandy. Now it is my turn. I'm excited!

Ok so me working in the ED for the next 2 years will help? I am also hoping to work in our church's medical clinic on Saturdays when I have some time open up.

Good luck, guys.

I'm guessing that being put on hold isn't THAT bad right now. ETSU is probably sizing up their class before making any decisions. Also, they have to admit more than 60 students, or they wouldn't fill their class. It's only 60 or so that matriculate.

I'm really impressed with ETSU. I've heard nothing but positives about their program. Talking with alums and students there, I don't think I've heard better reviews of a med school than I have heard of ETSU. And yeah, I know these alums and students personally, so it's not just their selected few saying those things.
