I've heard rumors of USA closing their med school. Can you shed any light on this rumor?

<img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> Please do shed some light on this subject! And tell me where they will transfer lamyers and I if they do! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

I really don't think this is something we'll have to worry about. Alabama only has 2 schools. Why would they shut one of them down?!?

my interviewer at UAB told me that also. She said "USA is having some financial trouble" and told me to try to find some information on it because it is public information. I can't find anything about it anywhere....

but i doubt they would just close a medical school down, i'm sure those seats will be distrubuted somewhere, probably given to uab for letting students do clinicals in the Mobile area, because you can't just cut down a medical student population in an area as big as that, can you?

Lamyers, do you know anything about this??

I'm an MS-I at UAB with several friends at South. I haven't heard anything around here about South closing, nor have I heard anything from any of my friends there.

I was briefed on the situation yesterday...it was due to a surprise encounter, but one I'm glad I had...

the university foundation had some internal conflicts in the past 5 years, and it is controlled by someone malignant to the school because he was edged out of the inner political circle...well, this malignancy spread, and many of the elite faculty members in turn jumped the boat....before this, USA was more highly regarded than UAB...you can contest this fact, but it is so. Anyway, the faculty had big problems with the situation,a dn funding was looking dismal..however, within the past 2 years, things have been coming up....things are not TOTALLY resolved...and the elite faculty are not back..however, the situation is getting better, and USA is now generally on par with UAB...perhaps a bit below..however, the future looks bright..no USA closing foreseeable..so..NO NEED TO WORRY! the UAB interviewer was a bit jealous, I presume ;-)

disclaimer: this information came from sources I can confirm as valid, but take it as what it is..2nd hand knowledge.

thanks for the response, thats good news to hear. usa has turned out some good physicians in the south alabama area I know of. i think the training at both places really depends on the student anyway, even though the quality of faculty does have an impact.

:D I'm getting so excited about moving to Mobile! :D Gainesville is pretty far from home. The move to Mobile will put me less than two hours from friends and family!

I can't wait to start looking for an apartment! If there are any USA med students reading this (or even undergrads), send me a PM letting me know the names of some good apartment complexes close to the school. I'm looking for a nice single ranging from $400 to $500 per month (my current rent is $405/month...anything close to this will be great!).

Aaaaaahhhhh!!! How cool! I can't wait to join you all! I've got a mental image of our first day in anatomy, and it's great! :D Sorry for sounding like a freak, but I can't believe it's finally gonna happen! :)

AS a USACOM grad in '98, I am not totally surprised with a rumor popping up that the school could close. The financial circumstances that the school faces in that area are formidable, there is essentially no private practice available for the clinical faculty with the market there so competative for insured patients. A # of good faculty have left (as has happened at a lot of academic centers in recent years) in the last few years.

While I feel I recieved a very good education there, I do not think that OWCC16's statement is on the mark. There really is no comparison b/w the quality & reputation of the faculty in between USA/UAB. UAB has many more leaders in the field types on faculty, and generally has the resources to keep them happy. Unfortunately, this is not always true in Mobile.

I heard the rumors, too but I heard that if it happens it would be many years and it wouldn't affect us. Swampy, pm me with your address and I can send you an apartment book! South rules! (Well it does if that's where you are accepted and going)

This is an old thread, but maybe I can revive it? We are doctors, after all, right?

In any case, how is South Alabama these days?

Especially, the Psych department?

Not much info out there about the school. So, any USA students, how was your Psych rotation?

And anyone looking at USA for a Psych residency?

Let me know!!
