Any UNLV students here play poker on the weekends?

I'm considering applying to this school. Not going to lie, one of the things that attracts me to this school, as an avid poker player, is the fact that its in Vegas. Obviously, my primary purpose is to become a dentist but I do enjoy the game of poker. If I could spend one day out of the week at one of the casinos at the poker room I would imagine that would be good for the soul haha

I was in Vegas few months ago and as someone who likes to play poker, I went down to the casino to check out the poker room. The room was foggy with cigarette smoke and there were so many Asian gamblers there that just give off the vibe of card shark. I walked away and spent money on shows and great restaurants instead.

If you aren't being modest of your poker skills, I wouldn't go play every weekend.

Since its Vegas, there are a lot of tourists playing the lower stakes. Naturally, this attracts the sharks which sucks. I'm more inclined to play weekly tournaments as that is where my strengths lie. My question on here is mostly regarding whether or not it is possible, while a dental student, to experience the poker culture in Las Vegas on the weekends? Don't kids go ham given that its vegas to begin with anyways.

It would depend on your intelligence. I know people who just study a lot on weekdays and still maintain very high grades. I doubt UNLV is harder than those schools. Just watch your purse strings.

The smoked up poker room filled with sharks is not something I'd be attracted to. If that is the case in all poker rooms in Vegas then never mind my question. However, if there are places where they hold weekly 70$-100$ buy in tournaments at a decent smoke free room, that would be cool. I like poker for the competitive and social aspect, as well as for a possible financial boost. I made a couple of friends through poker in Atlantic city and I've been playing for about 5 years now. If there is anyway that I could continue playing during school, even if its only on the weekends, I would be very happy. I imagined that being in Vegas would make things easier.

I'm sure you can play an occasional game, but poker takes way too much time to make any money at low stakes.

I play 1/2 NL cash games a lot, but only plan on doing it on breaks (I am an incoming D1).

Read Harrington on Holdem vol 1 and 2 if you want to learn some good tight/aggressive strategies! Good luck.

I actually own those books. During school we don't really have a choice but to play only during breaks. Do you play live or online?

I played online years ago but only do live games now. I like casinos more as people play a lot more loose/worse than online. If I play, I can sit there all day, which won't really work once school starts.
