Hi all,

Does anyone know if AMCAS converts our GPA's from foreign countries? My GPA was 1.75 with 1.0 being the highest. Though I graduated cum laude, i think it might convert to a 3.3 here, but I'm not sure. I had my transcript evaluated here but my grades weren't converted.

Also, anyone know if ADCOMs consider undergrad courses from foreign institutions? When my transcript was evaluated, it said that my degree is equivalent to that of any US accredited university.

I'm just worried 'cause my post-bacc GPA is really good and I'm hoping that my undergrad grades don't pull it down.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I graduated from UP Dil (University of the Philippines) in 2001. I came to the US, did my Master's, and started my own premed post-bacc program. I plan to take the MCAT and apply to med schools in '07. Anyone on/was on the same boat as I am?

My question is: Does anyone know if AMCAS converts our GPA's from PI (or any foreign country, for those SDN-er's from Asia)? My GPA was 1.75 with 1.0 being the highest. AMCAS will not give credit for grades earned outside of the U.S./Canada and, therefore, those cannot be used for the AMCAS GPA. Only grades earned within North American undergraduate/post-bac. and graduate institutions will count. Most U.S. schools will ask for > 60 credits (especially prerequisites), the majority of which should be earned in the U.S. Be sure to talk directly to U.S. admissions at schools you intend to apply to; you have a very unique situation. Also send your evaluated UP transcript (course-by-course evaluation) to each U.S. medical school. G'luck!

Thanks for the reply! Do you know if ADCOMs will credit the prerequisites, such as the math, english, and humanities courses i've taken in undergrad? I checked AMCAS, and they allow you to list the courses you've taken, i guess they just won't ask for the grade. I will definitely contact the schools I'm interested in. As far as sending in my evaluated transcript, when during the admissions process do i do this? when i submit secondaries or when the schools ask for it?

Thanks again! 🙂

It depends on the particular school. For me, I just had to take the missing prereq's in the U.S. (physics I and II), but I was more fortunate than most and I had a higher degree from the U.S., which helped. AMCAS might list them (they did for me...), but they will not be verified as earned credits and will not be included in the GPA calculation. You must, must, must contact each school you intend to apply to and give a brief, succint explanation of your unique situtaion and ask for their candid advice. Nothing beats hearing it 'from the horse's mouse' (so to speak). I cannot emphasize this enough. Lastly, do you have a green card or U.S. citizenship. This is an added hurdle.
