I signed up for a service provided to URMs whereby AAMC circulates one's MCAT scores to AMCAS schools. I scored double digits on the science sections but succumbed to the VR so I wasn't expecting any recruitment letters. Out of all the schools, Washington University in St. Louis sent me a letter. Anyone know exactly how the service works? I'm wondering if they get the composite score and if its above a certain score they'll send a letter. I imagined my lowly VR score would eliminate my chances at such schools.

amazing...i didn't even know such a service existed. lucky if you're a URM...

how nice to get recruited to med school!

Yah, I got that Washington University recruitment letter too, but no others. Do you know what kind of information was released? Just MCAT score and ethnicity?

How exactly do you become eligible for these recruitment letters? Do you just fill in the corresponding bubble on the MCAT registration form? I hope so because that's all I did.

You will continue to get them through September and October.

Good Luck.

I got one from UPitt and signed up for the service during the MCAT registration. I am hispanic but not considered URM by AMCAS definition so I doubt I will take advantage of any of these offers or recruitment letters. I was more curious as to what I would receive.

sorry for bumping such an aged thread...but I have the SAME situation.

I have received recruitment letters from the minority and cultural affairs offices of:

-Wake Forest
-Boston University
-Northwestern University

I was told in all these letters that I was selected from the Med-MAR for having competitive MCAT scores. They do not know my GPA or anything else other than my heritage and MCAT score. In fact, I am not even sure if they know what heritage I am but I'm going to guess that they have access to that information.

Northwestern even went as far as to extend their AMCAS deadline and offered to pay the secondary fee if necessary 😱

I don't know how I can not take up their offer...
Does anyone else have similar experiences (even from previous years) ?

Amazing what a 30+ MCAT score can do for you, even if it took you three times to get it.

These schools appear to want to be able to say they have a "diverse" student body, but are really just chasing the numbers (even if it took three times to get a decent score). They're in for a shock when they see the GPA's though.

Haha weird, I got a totally different subset of schools (Wash U, U of I (MSTP), Indiana, Cornell, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, maybe another one I don't remember). I don't think they mean anything, in the sense that they won't improve your chances to any extent, and in fact bugged me on principle since they were all about showing off and thus far not one of the ones I applied to from that list (which I had applied to to begin with) has offered me an interview. So really, it's not that exciting.

Well, ain't you charming.

I received one from a different school (Harvard), I wouldn't put too much stock in it. All it means is that your MCAT meets the threshold for attending the school, and that they are interested in maintaining racial diversity in the class. As for Northwestern's offer to pay for the secondary...don't they do that for anyone with a fee waiver? If you are not disadvantaged and they are offering to pay just purely based on your ethnicity, then I would absolutely take advantage of that. Also, if that's the case I am feeling really peeved that I did not get a similar offer.

Bitter much?

I got the exact same letter today from Northwestern. And no, I'm not disadvantaged but the fee waiver comment was still there. Ive also received recruitment letters from Pritzker, Harvard, and Univeristy of Iowa. I havent paid much attention to them. If i was interested in applying I would have done so already.

Thanks! it is amazing what a 30+ MCAT can do, I completely agree.
I find it entertaining how people can look at the same thing and judge it completely differently:
when I hit my 31--I was ecstatic to know that my hard work and persistence had paid off. So you can judge me by where I've been if you want...but keep in mind that I have gained much more in character by 'failing' than one might think.
always nice to see things from other points of view though.

... U of I (MSTP), ...I don't think they mean anything, ... it's not that exciting.
I actually got U of I too...i just forgot to include it cuz it was an email. But I admit, I can't help but get a lil' excited when I get a recruitment letter in the mail...even if it really doesn't mean much in the end.

If i was interested in applying I would have done so already.
excellent remark ry.
i just get overly excited when it looks like a medical school is trying to get me to apply.
I think that they are playing on my emotions of wanting so badly to be a physician that I get interested back in them as well!

Yeah...that doesn't even make sense. Aren't people more likely to have a high GPA/low MCAT combo than the other way around?

I know a lot of people with low GPAs--especially non-trads--who have high or amazing MCAT scores (including myself). I don't think we can generalize either way on this one.

Yeah, perhaps. Maybe it just seems to me like there are more people with 4.0/28's than 2.8/40's because I was one of the poor bastards dealing with the latter case and would've killed a kitten for a 4.0. That's right, a cute, cuddly kitten.

this thread is gettin ugly fast...

*hides all pet animals*

oh and Cbizzle, I just found out from a previous interview that I am considered a Non-Trad! it was news to me...but its fitting.

thats probably Exactly why they do it! and it works really well too im sure. Even i'll admit its cool to get any sort of attention from these schools, even tho i know the letter is goin in the trash. I'm sure they get a lot more applicants with those recruitment/diversity emails and letters. Money money money money........money!

Yeah, and that's what bugs me. A lot of the schools that sent me these letters had already received my application by the time they sent them. So they not only totally freaked me out by sending me small white envelopes after I'd applied already, but they also tried to sell themselves, making me even more irritated at not getting a bloody interview invite.

yea i can imagine how that is nerve racking!!! Also kinda says a little about the importance and thought put in to these letters....if they are sending out letters encouraging people to apply to those who have ALREADY applied, they cant be putting much thought into these things and i highly doubt it means much.

does this mean i should take the framed letter off my wall of honors and accolades now??? 🙄
im jk,,,im glad i was able to get some more insight from you guys. its nice hearing from others who got the letters too. It helps put the situation into perspective.
