I believe that BU is not sending anything until the end of March. Acceptances, rejections, and waitlists will all be sent then.

I called the office today and apparently all files have been reviewed and all decisions have been made, but the notices won't be going out for a couple more weeks.

that's funny, i actually called today too...same response, they said the letters won't go out until march 29th. pretty ridiculous

Next time someone calls please ask em what's their logic behind mailing everything weeks from now. 😕

I actually got an acceptance in like early feb and I inteviewed late in nov, i think. is it for the second round?

😱 really??? they made decisions already?! last i heard at the end of feb, they haven't looked at applicants yet... i guess they did it all in this week

Nope, that was for the first round. End of March for round two. All notifications by 1st week of April.

If you're accepted, the open house is 4/29 (A Saturday I think). It's alot of fun... you should go if you can!

Can you tell me some pros and cons of BUSM? Particularly things that you don't like as a medical student there.

i like how they sent me a rejection after i rejected them first. it's like they tried to fire someone who just quit out of indignation. those, buttmunchers. 🙄

Sorry for the late reply... had an exam friday and now i'm on spring break. Here's a few things I think are good and bad:

Pros:
Good school, gaining in prestige
Students get along well with each other
Match lists are ridiculously good in terms of both specialties but more so in terms of matching to top notch programs in any field
Basic Science years challenging; faculty supportive
Ample research oppurtunities
Mix between traditional and systems based... the systems based BOD course is amazing... all taught by clinical profs, very clinically oriented (i.e. useful info), and good prep for the boards.
Clinical experience during 3rd and 4th year rigorous and diverse (for example largest level 1 trauma in NE means one hell of an EM rotation), students get to do alot in the clinic. From what I hear, clinical expsorue is probably the best part about BU (but i havent experienced it first hand other than for ICM)

Cons:
Boston is expensive, neighborhood (South End/Roxbury) isnt great (but you can live anywhere and commute... I do every day with no problems)
School is expensive... esp. if you are interested in a lower paying specialty
Courses are challenging... aka hard. We get pushed to the limit sometimes.
Boston weather sucks
Long M1 year (ends in late june, starts in late august)
Lots of class time, but you dont have to go
Library isn't great... will be building a new one soon
No videotaped lectures unless for religious or medical reasons (yet... expect it in 1 to 2 years)

email me if you have any other questions, i am an Admissions Associate afterall Good luck!

I don't think we'll get anything until the 29th. =(

Do you know if they email or will letters be sent on the 29th?
Am I the only one in the boat that got deferred from the January decisions? Its been a hell of a long process, I interviewed in Oct. and I have been twiddling my thumbs since then. It was sort of painful to get my hopes up for the Jan. date and then get to wait another two and a half months. Oh well it will be worth it, hopefully.

Good luck to everybody

I was deferred from the January decisions as well. The Dean said that the majority of interviewees would be deferred during the first round of decisions, with only a handful receiving acceptances, and a handful receiving rejections, so I'm guessing there are quite a few people in this situation.

Wow...I can't believe they hold them for that long! Thanks for the info. Good luck everyone!

countdown till Boston decisions...9 days...

one week left guys...is this killing anyone else? worst part--i have a DO acceptance that requires a $1500 deposit by march 24th.

That really sucks!! Maybe you could call them and see if they will tell you your status. It is worth a try...the only thing they can say is no. Maybe you can explain without giving details. That is a lot of money to throw away (if it is nonrefundable). Unless you just have thousands of dollars to toss around. That would definitely set me back for a loooong time! 😱

fortunately, i just got word this morning that i got accepted to drexel. definetly relieves some pressure from the situation (drexel was higher on my list than nycom), especially since the nycom deposit was nonrefundable!! i think i may still try calling bu with that reason though...the wait has been way too long.

😎 Does anyone know if they are sending out the notifications via email or snail mail? Do you think we could find out our status if we called on the 29th??

Also...why are they waiting so long to tell us?? Do you think they are using info such as where else we have been accepted to make thier decisions?

i would say absolutely...their acceptance rate is much lower than other schools in their territory on the usnews list, and i think this is a big part of why.

How would they be able to find out our other acceptances, unless we tell them?

in mid-march, amcas releases all acceptances that applicants have gotten up to that point in the cycle

I have none so far. I hope they feel sorry for me and it works to my advantage. =/

i don't think that will hurt you...i think the thing they're really looking out for is people that have a lot of acceptances and wouldn't be likely to matriculate post acceptance. by maximizing the efficiency of acceptances given for filling the class, they look more competitive and can climb the us news rankings...people like us, on the other hand, they wouldn't have to worry about

Did you send a post-interview LOI? Think it's too late now at this point?

Cheers

I sent a letter of interest (but not intent) about two weeks after my interview to dean witzburg. at this point, i would say do it fast, but my gut is that it wouldn't matter much now. i'm pretty sure there was a post earlier in the thread about how they've been sitting on decisions for a while. good luck though, it could never hurt to try.

Hey Guys,
While perusing other acceptance threads, I noticed that some people were able to find out if they gained acceptance by trying to sign on to the financial aid site. When they were able to sign in, they knew they were accepted. Has anyone tried this for BU, seeing as they have already made their decisions? Just curious...

so i'm checking out the website now and i can't find a web portal. has anyone else had any luck?

anyone know how BU is going to give out acceptances? I know they accept almost 500 people (~50%) that interviewed. The dean said they only put a few people on the waitlist, so does that mean that most/all acceptances will go out on the 29th?

I was under the assumption that the number of acceptances and waitlist spots were closer to 350. It seemed that the lower number was almost bragged about as a sign of selectivity during the follow up discussion with Dean Witzburg.

Can anybody else verify on the number of acceptances? 500 acceptances seems a bit high.

I thought last year the numbers from the MSAR were like 900 interviewed, 450 accepted, 155 enrolled. But I could be wrong. I hope they are that high because it gives me a better shot at getting in. I don't know how that 450 breaks up into waitlist and outright acceptances, it could be 150 acceptances and 300 waitlists. Although the dean made it sound like they only keep enough on the waitlist to cover their but when people drop.

I just checked the numbers again from 2004, so it is a little old. But overall they had 9000 apps, 912 interviews, 435 acceptances, 155 enrolled. For OOS, like me, it 746 interviews, 350 acceptances, 117 enrolled. I think the stat that makes them look so selective is the 9000 applications. Because those interview/acceptance ratio are pretty normal. Like SLU, for example, interviews 1000 and accepts like 550, which is only a little higer percentage wise than BU. So I think there is a pretty fair chance if you had an interview to at least get waitlisted.

waitlist and acceptance are different according to the msar right?

I dont know how many they took earlier this year, but it would seem like they have to do a massive acceptence round. i was wondering if they do it all at once or slowly over time. anyone know someone at bu that could help out?

Yeah waitlist and acceptance are different on the MSAR. THere is no category for waitlist (it would be very helpful to have one though). The acceptance number does include people that come off the waitlist though, so it is a sort of mixed number of outright acceptances and waitlist acceptances as I understand it.

from what i've heard, the bu waitlist is very small compared to it's overall acceptances and still gives you a pretty good chance of getting in.

has anyone called bu lately? is march 29th set in stone?

Dean Witzburg told us at the followup session at the end of the interview day that if you were willing to stay on the waitlist long enough, it was pretty darn likely you would get in eventually. So it sounds like a small list, to me.

I was wondering if the dean made an announcement at the end of your interview day about how he didn't want us to write letters saying how great BUSM is? I remember sitting there thinking...OUCH that is harsh :meanie: . I think it is a wonderful school, but decided then and there not to waste my time, ink or paper trying to convince him that it is. Did anyone else experience this during the closing remarks??

When I interviewed, Dean Witzburg told us to not go home and immediately write a love letter to his school. Rather, he stressed that it was important that we take a pause and give a great deal of thought to our decision. Only then, the dean added, should we write to him and express how enamored we were with BU... or something like that, I was really hammered at the time and could barely see straight.
👍

That is my favorite part hehehe. Thanks that made my night!

anyone know how many people they accepted in jan?

THREE MORE DAYS guys!!! Im getting nervous. It would be so nice to get in and not have to take the MCAT in a month!!! Good luck!!! 🙄

The size of the waitlist varies considerably from year to year i'm told... they aren't just saying that either as to not get your hopes up. Last year there was little waitlist movement, year before they took like the whole thing...

i'm pretty sure they only took like 100-150 in the first round in Jan

i had some friends who volunteered to call applicants after the first round and i guess some of the applicants laughed in their face... i.e. said they weren't coming. So i would say the number of people who are still holding their acceptance is below 100...
