As has been told here before on this forum, score alone is not the only factor that determines admission especially on the west coast. High scores are definetely an asset but all is not lost especially with scores in the upper 80's.If you are open to going to any of the schools in the west coast then you may be fine with a score in the upper 80's. However, if your goal is to go to one of the east coast schools, then they do have a tendency to prefer higher scores. This is just a general pattern and there are always exceptions. But in the exceptional cases, you will find that the candidate often has something else in his resume that is extraordinary.
I think, you guys may want to work on your overall resume and find ways to improve it.Depending on what your goals are,you may be able to decide whether or not to retake.
