Anybody else got slaughtered by WS?
I got an M. (bottom 20%)
Just how much does it matter?
Can that break or make you?
Assuming that you did so much better on all other sections, is it irrational to rewrite the MCAT because of a bad WS????
This is sooooooooooooooo confusing.

Don't sweat it.. I scored an L the first time around and have been accepted to 3 schools already. I don't think you can say it will "make or break you". I scored an M this time.. (apparently I cannot express clear thoughts on paper). You'll be fine, regardless on the M.

I owned it, R first time 🙂 got totally killed by physics though 🙁 care to trade scores with me??

L = bottom 10% 👎

Hopefully it won't screw me over.

Even an M would have been okay... a lot more people get Ms than get Ls... 🙁

I went from an R in April to an O in August. LOL

I spent so much time drilling the sciences for 2.5 months and only practiced 2 essays before August. 😎

YES! I got 31N and the writing sample was the only section I had no worries about. I was an English major before switching to bio, and write A papers in my sleep. I am not the most confident person when it comes to academia, but I KNOW I can write. I felt very good about my WS on test day. Yet I scored at the 40th percentile?!

I would be pissed if I wasn't so pleased with my score otherwise, and if I hadn't gotten a 12 in VR. (Of course, it helps that adcoms don't look at the WS score, either. 😉) I think it's hilarious, to tell you the truth!

yeah i got an M this august compared to my Q in april...im at a loss for words as of right now

Yea, I bombed the verbal too. I ended up with a 33M and the breakdown is VR=7, BS=12, and PS=14. Yes, I know my verbal is gonna hurt me.

I was surprised to see "M" beside my 28, but I'm not going to worry! English is my native tongue, so maybe I should worry! 🙂

Yeah I got an M too. I was positive I did at least decent on the written portion. Oh well, there's always next time.

It seems like almost all the people I've talked to were really disappointed by their WS scores. Strange thing is, I KNOW that they are excellent writers. Maybe the markers got lazy and just drew letters out of a hat? 😉
Universities ignoring the WS is all fine and dandy for you Americans, but for some of us up north the WS is converted into a number. How ridiculous is that??

The writing section is extremely formulaic. They grade it rather quickly and the upper tier of the grading rubric is EXTREMELY subjective.

I got an M also...
couldn't really care less though 🙂

I'm starting to think that section is just to make sure you're fluent in English.

Yeah, but we're all at the bottom tier! I blame my shîtty WS on poor penmanship. Hopefully my 12 on VR will mitigate the M. I hated English in school, too.

oh, penmanship, that probably did me in too... 13V with an M, yuck

I honestly doubt your WS will matter if you construct a coherent personal statement so get it peer-reviewed extensively!

However, if you send in something like "Me be good doc. It iz my dream." then they might look at your WS score a bit more closely.

Do they grade on penmanship? I mean I got an M (or is it a M) but my stucture was ludicrously clear. For a second I thought maybe they didn't grade one because of my handwriting(I write like a doctor) but I don't feel as though I wrote a anything beyond the tasks so I can't see one essay being the reason for the entire score.

I still think they should test the graders for drugs🙂

I was partially facetious. But somewhere on the AAMC site there is something about legibility. And I think the point of it was: If we can't read it you are screwed. PS. Have a nice day. And that's all I remember.

I was feeling bad about my writing with 37O, but I guess I don't have much to complain about. It helps to see other people who didn't score nearly so well on writing as they did overall. Thanks everyone.

My handwriting is terrible, too. But isn't that pretty much the norm for doctors?

I got an O on the WS, a P the first time though. I thought I stuck to the formula, although maybe my thoughts werent clear (I have a tendency to stop writing in grammatically correct sentences when I'm tired, as my recent -1 for English on my instrumental chem test proved) which is what I think may have done me in. That, or they didn't like my essay about Hershel and Hannah.

Oh shoot man. Sorry, I forgot to remind you before you sent in your app!

The WS score is so utterly irrelevant. I got a "T" on that thing but it did not help me one iota. It wasn't brought up once in any interview. I would have gladly traded that for a couple points in the bio section. 🙁 Anyway, the adcoms just don't care about letter scores. You guys kicked ass on your numerical scores, that's all that matters!

If you're that worried about your writing letter, why don't you have it regraded?
Different people may view your essays differently (i.e. if you lost points because of bad hand writing, the new grader might try harder to understand your sentences). It might make a difference. Who knows?

OK, can I have $50?

Yeah...I got slaughtered, too: 32M (10 PS/11 VR/11 BS). I was okay with my score until I looked at the "M" and thought "What the...???". My handwriting is fine; I actually think my difficulty is in the time constraints and planning out what to write. At any rate, I practiced a bit during my Kaplan course and was consistently scoring 4/6, which should have put me around a P or Q.

Oh, well...nothing to do about it now. I'm not going to re-take because of a stupid M. 🙂 This has made me seriously doubt my writing skillz, though.
