Hi,
i am thinking of applying to florida, i understand i do not get the dds degree after the two year FTD course. However does anyone know if i can work in other states with this qualification?
Hello GKT.
Yeah, 4 year program (2 spots each year) = DMD
2 year program (12 spots each year) = FTD Certificate
With the DMD, obviously, you are eligible to apply for licensure anywhere.
With the FTD certificate, you can practise in Florida mainly. You need to contact any state board which you may become interested in getting licensed in inorder to verify if they will accept the FTD certificate for licensure or not. I have done that already, and I can tell you right off the bat that atleast 10 state boards other than Florida will accept it, after you send in your transcripts for them to evaluate. Another option though is for you to practise in Florida initially (2-5 years), then apply for other state boards licensure by reciprocation, rather than by credentials.
BEWARE. The UF FTD certificate is not accredited by the ADA. They also have shown no intentions of doing so in the recent years.
You also might want to know that they give preference to graduates of Southern American schools (spanish speaking), Cuba and Columbia to be specific.
Also most people I know whom got into the program were second or third time applicants.
You can also refer to this thread, and search the SDN posting for more input in regards to that specific program.
