I feel your pain...Are you gonna take it in April?

This is my second time writing. The ironic part is that I averaged 32 across all AAMC practice tests.

AND i thought that VR was quite easy in comparison to all the practice tests that i did (Kaplan and EK...where i averaged ~ 10 on both)....

AND I thought i killed bio....

The only thing that I was worried about was the PS but that mark actually went up decently....

My mark = 24S... 😡 😡 😡
The breakdown is shameful....thinking of throwning in the towel for good on this mcat business....

Use the TPR guarantee thing and enroll in the course. They give you three new diag practice exams. If you used TPR's a little over two month schedule, forget that and start studying a little earlier this time. It's only your first time so go for it again. Just be persistent and practice and I have no doubt you'll get the score you want.

Yeah, I am enrolled to take it again. I might use Examkracker stuff as well. It just really takes the wind out of your sails. I just hope I can improve...The odds from AAMC's web site for retakes isn't too encouraging.

I just wanted to take a minute, before I start studying like I should be, and tell all of you that you are not shameful at all. This test is one of the hardest things I have tried to undertake in my academic career. And I personally think that all of you are amazing to have even sat for it. It takes a certain amount of courage and determination to even do that.

Remember how we all felt 55 days ago. Thank goodness it is over. I don't mean to devalue how you all feel now by any means, but I think it is important that you give yourself a pat on the back once and awhile. Cause it is a long road leading to the goal we all seek, and you deserve to smile on the way at some points.

That being said, I wish you all the best of luck, and hope that you remember you have accomplished alot allready. And that the MCAT is important, but a test will never define who you are.

😀

Try examkrackers. I am a non-trad also. It had been a long time since I had seen most of this material. The books actually started out a little beyond what I remebered for most of the subjects, but once I was up to speed they were great. Doing the 1001 questions helped. Read the books a few times and you'll be ok. Also take all the AAMC MCATs you can, and study the questions you missed. Don't let the low score throw you, you gpa is excellent. Your goal needs to be high. I was shooting for a 34 and got a 36. I had taken the mcat in 2001 and shot for a 30 and got a 31...I haven't gotten smarter, attitude matters.

only my score is worse. I am a third timer and I trying to see whether I should continue w/ my secondaries. Can you email me and maybe we could make our decisions together, how is your GPA? 😕 😕

My email is : [email protected]

i got an 18 the first time. 19 the second. in april will be my 3rd try... don't give up just yet. try harder, study more, longer. but don't give up. however, have a great back up plan. don't let the only reason you didn't go to medical school be the mcat. analyze what went wrong, go from there. for me, it was that i did not know my science good enough. although i had taken all the pre reqs, it was as if i knew nothing. both times i didn't work on that. now i know what it is i need to do. we'll see if it pays off the 3rd time. but ya'll don't give up. i know its sad and depressing. but only use it as a motivator to get you started. good luck to everyone..

SO WHAT?! I ask, so what if you didnt do well on this exam, its NOT the end of the world.

After I learned to accept that, my life has been much more happy. Im not even just saying that. I am a worrier. Since high school, i would worry about how my grades were, worry about how i was going to do on the sats, worry about what college i was going to, worry about what my parents/friends/relatives thought about me....i even worried in college, but i worry no more. WHY? well because I am confident in myself. I got a 24 on this exam, but its not the end of the world for me. I am 21 years old, have my whole life ahead of me, and i have unlimited options. What i am choosing to do is to study again! Hard work does pay off, because i would be getting 9s and 10s on the bio and physics sections, but only 6s in the verbal. well i practiced my verbal like crayz, and choked on the sciencces. i ended up getting a 10 on the verbal!! the first time ever, ive never gotten that.

Needless to say, for those 3rd timers, its a honor to be even considering to take this exam, one of the hardest ever. Dont give up. If you cant get into medical school, there are a number of other ways to help people and try to better society. If ur doing it for the money, BELIEVE me, there are many other ways to make money. As long as your happy in the end, and you can look at the mirror at the end of the day and have self-respect, that is what matters!

I got 26-30 on my Kaplan practice test. First time, I was so nervous and couldn't concentrate at all. Second time, I got 9,9, and my verbal went down to 6. Writing went up from M to O. 3.8 GPA . Is there any school going to take me?

The AAMC practice exams are too easy. Do them right before MCAT to boost your morale. I was getting high 30's in them, while in reality I got a mid 30
(not complaining, but just realize that.

2) If you throw in the towel now, did you really want to do med? i mean its sometimes tough to evaluate this, even as a med student. but do you want to live th erest of your life knowing that you CoULD have made it in? HONESTLY, anyone can be a med student. anyone with determination/stuborness that is.

3) For those of you scoring poorly, some ways in school to bring up your marks:
a) Physics - make sure you nail your intro physics courses at unversity. Seriously physics is not hard. Get a good text and learn it. Class room can't really come easier
b) Take a detailed whole year physiology course (e.g. human phys) - i didn't know crap about biochem but b/c of my physiology and intro genetics, I cleaned up in the bio section. PHYSIOLOGY!!!! TAKE IT!!! NAIL! IT! (besides you'll need it in med school)
c) Genetics! not a bad idea
c) Biochem/Organic - important to know (organic in my opinion more so than biochem)

LEARN THIS COURSES WELL. IF YOU CAN't nail them, or get close to getting an A or A+ then you have to step up your habits!!! yes some schools mark harder than others, but the net effect is you should aim to be at the top 15-10% of the class.

4) I am not american, but.... if you scored less than 25 or around, I wouldn't bother with MD secondaries. Honestly from what i've seen most schools don't really consider students heavily unless there are around 27. There is no reason why anyone can't score 30 on the MCAT.

PRATICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. If your undergrad sucked it will come back and bite you!

Good luck to all, KICK ASS, stop wasting time on these forums feeling bad about it, and STUDY!

Finally watch biograpy. So many famous and influential people have gone through so much more horrendous things than getting a low MCAT score. Tests can be retaken! STUDY STUDY STUDY!

- canadian med I accepted at two great universities

Listen guys, remember this. If your score is low there is only one way it can go. UP. Now, imagine that you are an adcom and you come across an applicant whose MCAT scores are 18N, 20P, 28P. You see a significant improvement, someone who works hard. As opposed to someone whose scores were 29M, 28P, 30P. Yes that person went to a 30 but for all intents and purposes the score did not move.

Now, we are all in shock about our scores. I am too. I am wondering if I should call each school I applied to and withdraw the applications. I am not sure that I can take all those rejections, and I am getting rejections.

It is time to regroup. Time to study and study hard. There are 6 months until the April MCAT, plenty of time to study and do it well. We each have our own strengths and weaknesses.

We can start a yahoo group and form a study group for this. Each listing strengths and weaknesses. And then, kind of like office hours, each person will be logged on for a certain amount of time to tutor in their strength.

For example, I am a professional Molecular Biologist. On my version of the BS, there was a lot of molecular biology and I had no problem with it. I am willing to help people learn genetics and stuff like ELISA, Immunohistochemistry, PCR, general genetics, etc. MY weakness is Chemistry and Physics.

What doyou guys say. Shall we set up the group? Shall we set up the office hours?

I'm in. Gonna be having surgery sometime before January, but I'd love to join and help out whenever I can.

My strengths are very few, however. I did great in my Organic classes, scoring high 80's and low 90's on all quizzes and exams. I've never taught, but I'd love to give it a try.

I joined your April MCAT 2004 group yesterday, EMT. Are you gonna use that one or start another one? Maybe we should start fresh?

Great idea, by the way.

I think the Yahoo group is a great idea!
I'm taking upper level bio and I realize that I didn't study hard enough for the test.
I agree 6 months is plenty of time to prepare.

Also,I know part of the reason why I did awful is because when I'm nervous I find the passages impenetrable. I had a hard time with the PS section because every word I read didn't fully register and I had to go back and reread.

What's your yahoo group? I would love to join you guys. I need some tricks to increase my VR. I usually did ok 8-10 on kaplan practice tests, but when it comes to real test, I freeze. My strength is chem

I also am having a rough time with the MCAT. It's amazing how much it can affect your life. I wanted to remind everyone just like other posters, there is so much more to our lives, than the MCAT, and we just need to get past that hurdle. I crammed so much in the last 2 months of the MCAT that I could not sleep 2 nights before and lost concentration. My scores are 18 and 19 and studying for April now. This is a painful process but if we really stick to it as a team we will be successful. Since I graduated from undergrad 2 years ago, and recently from grad school, I would love the idea of a yahoo groups to support each other. I really believe we can get through this together. I have unlimited long distance on my phone so if anyone is interested in having a calling plan now to make sure we are all studying and working together, I would love that as well. 🙂 I am a Professor of Physiology so I would love to help there.
Does anyone know of anyone who has gotten in with my scores? or after improving significantly?
I am trying to create an online group now.

Hey all,

Well...looks like I'm gonna be taking them over in April as I expected...WAY too embarrassed to post my scores, so don't anyone even bother asking...I'll just say that the score doesn't really fit my GPA (i.e. with my GPA of almost a 4.000, you would [most likely] expect a decent score, which was definitely not the case)...was thinking about August 2006, but I sure don't wanna waste another summer...also, by the end of this semester, I'll be done with genetics and physiology and I thought I saw someone post that these 2 courses are essential. Well, not too depressed, since won't affect me academically in school....but still a bit upset...thank God I wasn't expecting anything spectacular. Well then, April 2006 MCAT, here I come!

hey, I got 20P on both times I took the MCAT scores. They were the same subscores, when I checked the scores online, the numbers were like two knives stabbing my heart🙁 I couldn't beleive it, I prepared three times harder the second time around and I did not improve a bit. of course it's not ok...but I realize that worrying about it is not gonna change it

Allow yourself a day or two to cry about it if you want (I did), and then start again. Don't give up, you're more than that!

I would say that same thing like you said, I just had gotten so carried away when I looked at my MCAT scores. I was so upset, and I just can’t believe what I said about shooting. I was so anxious to see my scores and then the whole thing became like a chaos on that I was talking. I had weird psychological phase, and I was so out of order and I am back to normal stable stage. I am so glad. getting ready for the april!! YYYaaaYYYaaa

I just want to say that no one here should be beating themselves over the head. Just taking the classes required for the MCAT is a formidible task! Few academic tests compare to the emotion and intellectual stress machine that this exam is. Sorry to sound cheesy, but I'm proud of all of you. 👍

Anyway, for those of us who have not taken the MCAT, do you have any advice? I know all the basic stuff is out there, but did anything contribute to receiving the lower scores? For example, did anyone not take some of the required classes (like a coworker of mine), or skip a prep class? Any advice would be greatful.

Besides, when was the last time you chose a doc based on his or her MCAT score?

CrazyPremed

good luck to all you folks. you *CAN* pump up your mcat like crazy, with lots of studying and hard work. the ABSOLUTE KEY is practice materials / passages. don't think you're 'wasting' the passages by doing them early and so on... if you've reviewed the material, just start to do questions -- and in a few weeks, do those SAME questions... you won't remember the answers and it'll be good practice. do the questions timed. it's not about what you know, but how you take tests, and answer the questions, and critically reason things out.

i KNOW you all can get a 3X or even 4X if you put your mind to it.

The MCAT sucks...its a known fact that it is the worst test EVER...and while it is suposed to test knowledge, i dont believe it does or there wouldn;t be so many strategy sessions....

But is this is your goal, as it is mine...it is best to stick to and and give it your best over and over again.

PS- this will be my third time....so good luck and study hard...
