I don't know what your definition of "less than stellar stats" is, but I got into UCSF with a 29T and a 3.8. Granted, these numbers are only 1/3 of the total "score" generated for an applicant at UCSF - which means that my "non-numbers" must have been good (e.g., interview (1/3) and extracurriculars, essays, recs, etc. - also 1/3). However, that same set of factors in my application did not get me an interview at UCLA, UCSD and UCD, but got me waitlisted at UCI. Hope that helps,
