I am loooking at the Carribean schools, and I hear so many different opnions and am now totally confused. Can someone here please help out with the follwoing :

1) I hear Carribean is the worst thing that I can do, instead try to get in US med school at any cost, even if it takes years.

2) "There is no way you will get into any match after you come back to the US ".. could take you 2/3 years ..

3) Become a DO in the states then going to the Caribe.. whats the pro/con of soing this ?..

Thanks for any first hand experience with all this.. Confused.. you bet! .. 😕 😕 😕 😕

I'm not a carib grad, but the general notion and the general advise for consideration goes, in hierarchy:

1. US MD school

2. US DO school

(Give the above a good two tries.)

3. Foreign school such as in Ireland, Australia, and the like

4. Carib school

This is just for whatever it may be worth. There are certainly very good arguments that can be made for some choosing a DO school over an MD school, for example; as well as arguments for applying to US schools and the Euro-like schools concurrently, and just going with whoever accepts you; or all and doing the same.

I would say a carib school is far from the worst thing one can do, keeping in mind that derm and such will not really be options for you, and that there are perceptual, and some actual, qualitative disparities between the carib schools.

Best wishes.

i must say, i agree with stephen. in fact, if you really want to be a doctor, NOT going abroad can be the worst thing you ever do. just be aware that it takes a lot of comitment and it will not be easy. but, an argument can be made that this will actually prove to be a better education (and not only medical).

one thing to consider, is that St. Georges has an excellent reputation, and it is a carib school. other than that, i would agree that the aussie, irish and selected other european schools should be sonsidered before the carib, but this is largly a matter of opinion. mexico also has good programs, and you have the bonus of learning spanish. so, if you must go abroad, embrace the challenge and do the best you can. realize that it is not an american education, but by no means does that mean you are getting a lower standard of education. immerse yourself in your new culture, study hard and the results you want (unless it is optho, ortho, derm) will be there. good luck!!!
