I am just wondering if anyone here has left a comfortable paying career and switched to dentistry and end up having education debt more than 200K? What 's so good about dentistry that justifies a major career change that leaves you in debt for few years after getting a DDS/DMD ? I always wondering what's the mindest of those old ppl in dental school..Thanks!

Do you already have 200K in debt, or are you referring to the 200K (+/-) you would add?

I am about to start my third year of dental school, and when I started I left a job paying about $75,000 a year, not enough to make me rich, but I was very comfortable. I am not so fincancially comfortable now, as I will be about 100 grand in debt by the time this is over. Financially, I should come out way better in the end though, as over time I build a practice; it just takes a little bit of sacrifice for now. Also, its about more than the money. In dentistry, we have the opportunity more so than in many other fields to be our own boss, open up 3 or 4 days a week only if you want, etc. etc. There are lots of benefits, dentistry is a great field. School not so much, but you do what you have to do.
