Anyone going to Finch / Chicago Medical School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here's, generally speaking, how the first year works at Finch: (I might be off with some of the schedule but hopefully you get the idea)

Term 1 (ends mid October or so):
Genetics ( about 3 weeks and your done)
MCB (done at the end of the term)
Anatomy
Histo
Biostats
an ethics course

Term 2: (end of Oct-->mid Feb)
Physio (continues into term 3)
Histo (ends in Feb)
Anatomy (ends in December)
Biochem (starts in January and on into term 3)
ICM (clinical course...not sure exactly when it starts but sometime around now)

Term 3 (ends mid May then):
Physio
Neuro
Biochem
ICM

SUMMER!!!! (mid May to late July)

Physio and Biochem final grades are given in mid May after the Term 3 final. Between term 1 and 2 and term 2 and 3 you have at least a week off (in the latter case this is essentially the spring break).

Hope that sheds some light

Thanks for the info DesiMDHopeful :)

Any news from anyone? Did you guys get housing yet? I still didn't send in my FA application. I am a bad girl

I'm looking for a female roommate and I want to live in the Woodlands in a 2 Bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment (one of the renovated ones). I plan on getting a kitten. I'll have a car and I'll be happy to drive my roomie to the supermarket :D Any takers? :p

Hi Dr Foxy,

Did you actually call Woodlands and secured an apartment? I am sort of holding my breath that I get accepted at NYMC, so I haven't done anything regarding housing at CMS. Also, I'm telling myself that once the roommate list is out, that's when I'll get that stuff taken care of.

Is there a renovated section at the woodlands that's more costly? I want to end up at the better side, it's good that you mentioned it on your post :)

Nope, I don't have an apartment yet, but I know what I want. The host I stayed with lived on the rennovated side, which is the side closer to the back. The roommate list should be out on June 19th, so I guess I'll really start looking for a roommate then. I'd like to find someone from the area so she could go check out the apartment and make sure it's ok, since I'll have to do evyerything by phone. I was also thinking I'll just find a roommate during orientation--at least then I'll meet my roomie in person and make sure they're normal. I plan to call the Woodlands tomorrow to see what they have available. I'd also like to buy used furniture, but the best time to get that is now and not in July. Oh well.....

Doctora Foxy....I sent you a PM.

Everyone else...if you've got any questions about the woodlands or CMS, I can help you out. I just spent the last year there as a grad student in the MIS program and hopefully I'll be an M1a next year there as well. I also lived in the woodlands so I can help you out there as well. Im actually looking for a roomate at the moment, but Im waiting till I hear back about my status at the school officially till I pursue that more actively. Anyways...if you guys have any specific questions ask away... :)

~I'M~ going to FU/CMS, too! i can't wait.
WHACKegan....i mean, Waukegan, is such a great place to live. (b/c don't let them fool ya..."North Chicago" is NOT the northside of Chicago. i got okie-doked on that. "North" Chicago means, 46.1miles north of the city limits, and about 60mins of driving w/o traffic.)
and your neighbor is the Dean.
and i have $32K extra in my bank acct.
and people think Chicago Med is Univ of Chicago Med....
and i'll get to SEE the ~seasons~!! (meaning, it'll be hot/humid and gross for 3months, and then it'll be cold/grey and windy/snowy/rainy for the rest of the year!
and dude...we get Spring Break in February! you cannot beat that!!! Spring break in the winter time!
and at least you don't need a map to find your way around campus...oops, i mean, around THE building. and it's not hard to find the ONE classroom and the ONE auditorium that you'll have ALL your classes in, with the SAME students!!! (hopefully the new wing/addition will be done soon).
and dude! ice scrapers rule! and gettin to wear scarves and mittens rules!

nice attitude....are you for real?

I am so angry right now, especially after reading something else negative on www.medicalgold.com. What is wrong with everyone? Be happy you're going to be a doctor!

p.s. Does everyone there hate it? My student hosts (Chandra and Shaina) seemed to be ok with it.

Ha...well that's another outlook on the place. But again...I just wanna be a doctor so I wont complain.

The three people I met with at lunch weren't ecstatic...they probably were the least happy people I met at the 10 schools I interviewed at, but they didn't hate it. They were MD/PhD and in it for the long haul. I really think you can make that school work. You seem to be a very upbeat person.

The school is really what you make of it. I mean, it's not in the best of locations, but at the same time, there is stuff there if you want to find it. It's more conducive to studying that way, and the city is accessible if you want it. In the last two years, your third year you're primarily in teh city itself, then in your 4th year it's open and you can go anywhere you want. So dont worry what some people will say...it's what you make of it.

The residency match lists for the past few years speak for themselves. CMS's students get good residencies, something that keeps them even with a lot of other schools in the country IMHO.

hey. i'm just being honest. of course, i don't want to bite the hand that feeds me, especially the hand that was the ONLY one that has given me a chance to be a doctor. so i'm extremely grateful to be there.
but it's like someone told me during my interview: if you COMPARE it to your own expr's (as the 80% of the california kids at CMS will do), then yes, it will NOT be comparable. but then again. california (LA and SD) has spoiled me for EVERY city. (i don't think even NYC compares to southern cali). and Whackegan does not hold a candle to any of them.
i'm a cityslicker. i like museums, coffee houses, and being able to get any KIND of food i want, at any kind of HOUR. i like beaches with waves and good weather.
so yeah. most people bite their tongues when they are hosts/tour-guides. and if i was a tour guide, i would also bite my tongue. but this is an open forum. and i want to be honest about it. b/c everything i say, is with a grain of salt, and with a grain of bitterness. kinda like only ~I~ can make fun of CMS, b/c i'm part of CMS. but i would take offense at someone baggin on my school.

but i would've liked to know some of this before i got to CMS and got okie-doked. b/c many will be in for a rude awakening.

and true. it IS what you make of it. but if CMS was a better school, then your positive could make even MORE of it. and believe me. my friends and i DO make the most of it. b/c true....the school is accredited, and you willi get a MD in the end. and after the first 2yrs of sciences, then you get to live downtown and all is good. and i don't buy the hype about it's more conducive to studying....i'd rather have the temptations of a real city, than be FORCED in exile in Waukegan.
and yes....since so many kids are from cali CMS has a name and rep in cali b/c so many go back, and b/c doing your clinicals IN the downtown Chicago hospitals is good expr, you can get decent residencies.

so really. i'm not the dark cloud that is just a wet blanket. i love the fact that CMS gave me a chance. and i'm a optimist and i DO make the most of things. carpe diem, and all that. i watched all the After-School Specials. i'm just sarcastic, and i think these forums are pretty funny. especially the rumors and misinformation, and neurotic stuff.
i'm just bored and trying to be funny, not a squeaky wheel.

i'm in the same boat as trying2becomeMD. I'm also holding my breath about NYMC, while at the same time waiting for the roommate list for Finch to become available.

otherwise, i'll be glad to live w/ u, dra.foxy. i also liked the 2 bdrm, 2 bathroom setting. unfortunatley, i'm not from the area and won't be able to check out the place until rite b4 school starts either.

anyone know if woodlands has free parking? or how much it would cost? are there free parking on campus? thanks for any info.

C33,

I think the parking at woodlands and CMS is free. While interviewing, I parked my rental car at CMS with no problem. My friend at woodlands didn't mention anything about parking fees at woodlands.

Hope there's going to be some movement at NYMC soon!!!!!

I must interject on the happiness of the students for Foxy. While I did not interview at Chicago Med, I would like to mention a generalized view I have of students at medical school.

A lot of students may not seem happy, especially if it is their first year. There is quite a bit of transformation that they undertake --> finding new friends, getting comfortable in a new environment, and med school in itself is a huge challenge to many, not so much because of the studying, but the fact that your support group that you built up in college is gone (e.g. old friends and family) so you may feel like :p . Now you must undertake this new task while studying at a pace that you have never studied before.

I have plenty of friends who said they hated  their school for much of the first year, but then once they got comfortable things are great.

So in summary, don't always judge the school by the students, especially if they are first year students or have just gone through block exams. If you like the school, you will have a great time.

:)

Thanks ajz :)

And FU...CMS, I read over your post this morning and it made me laugh Sorry I reacted so quickly. See you in July..... :)

i dont' know what the hype about the Woodlands is, but i would NOT live there, even if you paid me. too close, too anal, and the mgt is kinda shady. and it smells really bad in there....thin walls or bad ventilation. i don't know. but yes, if you're lazy, it IS walking distance from school. but i consider that a negative.
but i want to know....since i mostly have only heard rumors about this.
once you enroll in a medical school...you CANNOT get into ANOTHER school, even if you are waitlisted, (and i just got confirmation a friend who agrees, though he says it's not set in stone).
so a word of warning to those going to CMS,e specially those w/ the conspiracy theory that CMS's early July29th start date is SOLELY to trap people and force them into going.
i'm starting to believe the Xfile theories too....i mean...july29th? c'mon now. every other school is Aug start date.
but like i said...starting in July means we can have Spring Break in the winter months of February!!! yeah!

I believe MCPHU also starts in July (the 25th), and I do agree it is to force people to go and lose out on waitlist movement. But when you only have one choice, what can you do?

p.s. I stayed in the Woodlands and it didn't smell. :p I thought it was nicer than the run-down apartments my friends live in in Boston....so I still plan on living there. I like to be "on campus," otherwise I know I'll never study. If I end up not liking my decision, I'll just move out for second year.

It looks as though I will be attending CMS also next month, as the early start date will most likely prevent me from getting a waitlist spot elsewhere. I don't think I could manage living in waukegan. Right now I am looking for places to live in Evanston and will plan on commuting. Is anyone else going to be living closer to chicago for years 1 and 2?

Hey Foxy-

I'm a big fan of yours, so I hate my first post to you to be a correction...but MCP starts on
August 12. I know you're a stickler for details. By the way, any med school would be lucky to have you as a student. Good luck.

Yeah once you start at the school then you can't go elsewhere. I think maybe in some special cases (like if you get into your state school where it would be IMMENSELY cheaper than CMS) you might be able to get out, but otherwise, once July 29th rolls aroudn that's it. Im not sure if orientation counts or not, but I definitely know you can't move after the 29th. Ive also heard that conspiracy theory about schools that are less confident about keeping people in their class starting early, and those more confident (Hopkins, the Ivys, etc) start late. Who knows....haha.

I hate spreading false info, thanks for the correction. :) Some weird girl at my school told me she starts at MCP on July 25th. Then we had the same conversation that's going on in this thread. Maybe she's just moving there then. I dunno.

well...sine CMS IS a private school and costs A LOT....that practically means if you get into ANY other school, it'd be cheaper and you could make an argument for changing, right, Desi?? (and no, Desi, i'm not Mike Kim, the guy with the glasses and hat everyday. i was Scott Lip-Ring's roommate).
i don't know. i'm going to have to ax somebody. all i know is, last year, people were mad griping about filling out some AMCAS survey online, that basically tells the world that they are enrolled in med school once they filled it out. many resisted filling it out, on the grounds that it could eliminate other potential waitlist prospects. but CMS said you had to, in order to get your student ID and stuff. whatever. i already have my student ID, and i'm NOT going to fill that thing out until the last possible moment.

Does CMS have a white coat ceremony?

one of the other "great" that i love about CMS....the do NOT have a white coat ceremony.
But the little bookstore has plenty you can BUY (for a lot of money), so you can do your preceptorships, (which, since you're in the middle of nowhere, you'll have to drive hella far to go to).

but hey. what's that about a horse and a gift and in the mouth? yeah. CMS is a horse or something. and i have a big mouth. or something.
thank you. drive thru.

FU...CMS, my little Finchy guru, I have a few questions for you :)

What bank do you recommend? Is there one that all the students use? Is there an ATM near campus?

Will the new building have a gym and when will it be opened?

Do you know if MS1's will have class at 12 still? (I like that :p ) My hosts said classes might be in the new bldg so MS1s ans MS2s won't have to share the lecture hall.

Thanks :)

Foxy

p.s. Congrats on *officially* getting in. :D

FU/CMS...I know who you are now...haha. Yeah CMS is mad expensive so you could probably make the case for any school, but I know a friend of mine who was in a similar situation when he got in off waitlist to one school but was hoping to get into his state school where it'd be cheaper. I think he had said he might have been able to still take the other acceptance if it worked out, but I coudl be wrong about that. Either way, I didnt know about that survey, but Im with you on waiting till the last sec to do it...haha.

Just to add...MISers found out today as well about our fates. Looks like I'll be seeing you guys in July (barring if I get in off waitlist elsewhere) :)

Hey Foxy...saw your note just there. There's a BankOne ATM in the school, and Bankone is the biggest I guess chain bank in the area. There are some other local banks with branches that are closer, but I myself went with Bankone just because the ATM was right there in school. Ive also heard that we're gonna have early classes thanks to the new building but Im not sure. The new building is also supposed to have a new eatery place and a bball court as well as a student lounge from what I hear. Most of it is word of mouth, and that's all Ive heard, but FU/CMS may know more details.

•••••What's great about not having a white coat ceremony? I think its a wonderful way to acknowledge entrance into the medical profession. Are you sure Finch doesn't have one?
What does the book store (and being able to buy lots of things..) have to do with preceptorships? I am not sure I understand..so clarification would be nice!

he's being sarcastic

Instead of being given free coats at the cermony, we have to buy the at the bookstore. At least my parents will be happy they won't have to fly in again.

Thanks df! :) but...it still stinks to not have the ceremony :( Wouldn't your parents have wanted to be part of it? still...travelling is expensive...oh well...

Yeah they did want the ceremony....oh well

Maple, are you definitely going to Finch?

Welll...I am not sure. I am waitlisted at MCW and SLU and Creighton! My ist choice is MCW. Apparently I have a decent rank..34/187..and since they take off 65-70 every year..I've been told that things look good for me..BUT so far only 1 person has dropped from the class..placing me at 33. :( Because Finch starts so early..I maybe "forced" to attend..Honestly, I did love the schools and the facilities..and don't care about pre-med "perceptions" about CMS's ranking or lack of it. Its just that I loved MCW a lot when I was there..so I am hoping for something to turn up. If that doesn't come thru then I will attend. I know you are waitlisted too..so are in a simmilar situation..right? Whats your top school?

rxfudd--thanks for the info :) I guess it makes sense to have it then, since it's right before you do clinicals :)

Foxy, Desi is right. i think BankOne is the best bank. they give out all kinds of hand outs during Orientation...and a great Student Handbook...that lists local banks, groceries, movie rentals, coffee houses (like all 3 of them). the student hand book has all the cultural things of Whack-egan and downtown Chicago.
BankOne does have an ATM ON campus (can't do deposits though), and it is a pretty big bank, so you can use the ATMs downtown: when you're out clubbing and for 3rd and 4th yr.

the new building is "supposed" to be open in December. well, that's what they last said when i was still going to StudentCouncil meetings (since i was VP of the APs and all).
Pete said that the weight room will be in there, and that it's supposed to be marginally better, and bigger. but i'm not sure.

the weight room is pretty sad. but...i figured, it's free, it's ON campus, and it has enough weights and machines to do all your workouts (esp if you're creative). and i was still able to maintain my sexiness and incredibly good looks with the CMS weight room, so it's all good (Maple...again, i'm j/k). there are two local gyms (Gold's and Bally's), but i doubt anyone will not want to drive that far to work out after a day of class.

i don't think anyone has class at 12noon? (not this year at least). that is usually the lunch hour. 12 to 1pm.

i don't know if the new bldg will be for M1s and M2s. it might be mainly for the podiatry students. (and Desi, the "bball court" is unfortunately, an OUTdoor court. so it'll be operational from like, Aug till Nov, and then it'll be snow-covered or rained on till we are done with the school year).
but yeah....the new wing is supposed to be home to a food court, lounge, and weight room for sure. but it's a big bldg, so who knows what else they are going to put in there. (i voted to make it a full sports arena/concert venue. and then maybe we could get Finch/CMS to get a school mascot, and collegiate sports teams!!! a mascot would be cool at least. any suggestions? maybe i lack an abundance of school-spirit b/c we have no school mascot to identify with??)

dude...any other questions? Desi and i are knockin' em out! rock on, Desi.
(see...i think CMS is cool, b/c of the comradery and kinship b/t the AP alums/M1A's and the new APs and regular M1's. they were a great help to me, and they really root for everyone to do well. they also know what's up with prof's, tests, and they have all the notes and old tests!) and now i'm a M1A!!! and so is Desi!! but you all have to promise not to hate us, while we only take ONE final and work part-time jobs, while you all take 4-5 finals each quarter, and have to stress, cram, and wig out, okay???

hasta pasta

Ha...right on FU/CMS, my fellow M1A bro...we've gotta represent on SDN. Got anymore questions throw em our way!!

The court's gonna be indoor?? That sucks. I had heard from a couple people that Kristine Jones had told them there'd be a court and she mentioned in context with the new building so we were hoping that meant indoor. Oh well...guess it'll be cool to have at least something nearby. There's an indoor place just up the road but you're at their whim as to whether or not they'll let you on. It's weird.

Id heard a couple people say that classes will be early as in 8ish due to the new space available with the new building. At least a new weightroom in that new bldg would be cool. The current one tends to get too crowded sometimes...I always tried to go in the mornings or around 7ish in the evenings to avoid the rush. Hopefully this new one is bigger though. Id definitely be down with the sports arena idea. That'd be cool to have there, although I dunno who we'd play without getting our asses kicked...haha. I guess our mascot could be a goose or whatever the hell those birds are that roam the back parking lot when the weather is warm.

Yes and future classmates please dont hate us M1A's...we'll be living the easy life (especially those of us that were ex MISers who will only have ICM in the 3rd term...hehe) but we'll definitely commiserate with you guys...hehe. Actually, the beginning is kind of rough for the ex-MISers because we didnt take MCB or genetics, so I'll be in the trenches early with you guys. And that leads me to the comradery thing. I definitely agree with what FU/CMS says about the comradery at CMS. There are a few that are really competitive types, but for the most part everyone's trying to help everyone else out in some way or another. We're all in the same hole known as WHACKegan (as FU/CMS puts it) so we gotta help each other to survive and stay a little sane. Any APs or M1s that need help next year, you can rest assured there'll be many M1A's or M2s willing to help you out.

Keep the questions coming.....

Is the Woodlans weight room a little nicer? B/c the CMS weight room seemed nasty when I saw it...

Well the woodlands has 2 good treadmills, a bike, and a couple stairmasters. In the back room (where the bike and one treadmill are) there's a stereo, and the front room has a TV. So I think it's good for doing some cardio, etc but for doing any lifting it sucks, because there are no free weights in there. There's maybe 5 or so nautilus machines which aren't that great...actually I take that back, the one for abs is at least pretty good but the rest arent that great. I often would lift in the CMS weight room and do cardio in the woodlands work out room. Hopefully the weightroom in the new bldg will be good...we'll have to see

yeah. i got okie-doked on the bball court, too. but i was talking to Derek (the executive council Pres), and he was like, there is no way they could possibly afford to put an INdoor court. and when you think about it, (the size, upkeep, costs, etc), i can see why. but at least Derek raised enough money to put an outdoor court on campus.
and yeah. Lake Bluff rec ctr is dope. i go there all the time. they ARE kinda whimsical (mostly at nights during OpenGym), but i'm cool with most of the people that work there.

and i forgot....Foxy, (the fitness fanatic), there is a weight room there also, that is REALLY nice. but you have to pay dues to use it. and i'm not sure, but from the way they sweat us for just using their bball courts, you'll probably have to be a LakeBluff residents. (and CMS, woodlands, etc, is NorthChicago....and no LB).

the Woodlands weightroom is janky. as with all other apt complexes....just think apt complex "exercise room". i wouldn't even say weight room.
the Lake Forest rec ctr, also has a nice facilities, and a weight room. again, pay to play. but those two rec ctrs are much closer than the Bally's and Gold's (both like 20mins away).

but according to Pete, he was in charge of the new weight room. he helped with the blueprints and everything. (he even got them to add a few extra feet to the blueprint plans). but...all the equipments is just being moved from old to new. so not much help there. but i have faith in Pete to hook it up as much as he can.

8am classes?? helllll no! i do remember that Prof Kaplan said Biochem would be at 8am??? but again....we M1As won't have Biochem, so whatever! that would be heinous tho'.

the Finch Geese? the CMS Goose? mmmmm. the Finch finchs? hahaa. yeah. those geese have got to go. they poop all over the IM football field.....but i guess they are part of "seeing the seasons"!!
i just wanted to have a NCAA basketball team, and kept day-dreaming that all the construction was for a sports arena. that would be cool. and i think if we played some of the millions of chicagoland smaller schools (even Northwestern), we could hang. and the arena could be a concert venue at nites! Pop Odyssey tour! Drowned World tour!! 2pac Comeback tour!!! dude! sweet! dude!

ok, so does the Lake Forest Rec Center have aerobics classes? And how much does it cost per month (or year) for a membership?

I think I'll just join Bally's--it's probably worth the money and it would be nice to work out away from school.

Thanks for the info boys :)

Some other questions: what kinds of stores are in the area? I need Target...I also heard IKEA is closeby....and how far is that Gurnee Mills place? are there movie theaters and restaurants nearby?

i have NO idea what the LakeForest or the LakeBluff rec ctr's charge. but again...i would bet (though i'm not positive), that you must be a resident of those communities in order to use their facilities. i've been turned away from both places before b/c i did not have a ID with an address that said LB or LF.
and i would be impressed if anyone joins any of the real gyms (Bally's and Gold's), b/c like i say...if you live at the Woodlands, your sphere of influence will be a 5mile radius, and you will dread driving so far. 20mins sounds not that bad...but trust me, time is truncated in med school and in Waukegan.

you'll get hand-outs...of ALL the stores. video stores, grocery, utility, hardware, etc stores. IKEA is IN the city, so that's far. Target abounds out there, so that is no sweat. Gurnee is about 13miles from campus? 20mins driving.

movie theatres: Gurnee Mall. a janky one for $4 students, but is pretty dirty.

restauratns: not much in Waukegan. all franchise and fast food. nothing opens past 10pm, except for Wendy's till 1am. and if you have a particular craving....good luck. it's not like LA or anything. you'll have to go to the ciyt, or maybe Evanston if you're lucky.

but like i say...Whackegan is cultural barren and desolate.

Why would anyone expect a suburb to be like LA? Most places don't have restaurants open all night.

Hey, Monneray Hills is right next to LA and a Bally's is 3 miles away in Pasadena.
