I'm in a state of confusion on which medical schools are good. I'm new at this whole thing. I'm still a freshman in college and I know what kind of doctor I want to be. I want to be an Emergency Medical Doctor. I just wish everything else was easier to figure out. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. Thanks

You can find all the rankings of all the med schools at usnews.com. Personally though, I really don't care which med school I get into, as long as I get into one! And I think I echo the sentiments of 90+% of pre-med students.

Right now, just concentrate on doing well in your undergrad classes and trying to get some good clinical exposure/volunteer experience. Managing these two things well will help you tremendously when you are applying, no matter where you want to go. As far as where to go, the biggest piece of advice I've heard over and over again from physicians is that how you do in med school, esp. compared to your peers, is far more important than where you go. That's why it's good to perfect your study techniques now during undergrad. Good luck.

My favorite: grab a listing of medical schools, and tape it up to your wall. Blindfold yourself, go ahead and sip on that alcoholic drink first if you like, and then get a push pin with a strip of cloth attached... then pin the tail on the list! Voila, there's the medical school of your choice... hey, you pinned the tail on it!

No no no... but really, the choice is totally up to you. Do what you want to do, and do it because you want to and not because someone's telling you to. If you want to go to a cheaper in-state public school, be my guest! I'll be aiming for the same. On the other hand, if you want a mega-money private college on your certificate, help yourself. I won't be paying for your education either way!

I would suggest you look at how the schools focus their education. If you want to be an E.R doc and have no interest in research then then the list of schools on U.S. News & World Report will not be as usefull to you. If you look in the magazine they base the rank on reputation and amount of research funding each school gets from the NIH. Call some hospitals and ask to shadow some docs and ask them about their education. Big thing! When you find a school you are interested in find out where their students get residencies and what percentage of their students pass the Step 1 and 2 the first time. If a school fits you it is the best one.

I second the recommendation of usnews.com -- US news and world report does annual ranking of colleges, grad schools, and professional programs. They med schools overall and again for specific areas. Go take a look!
