Just wondering if anyone has received a decision from University of Maryland recently. I interviewed in Feb. and was put on "Hold" in late March. Also, has anyone been taken off the waitlist?

    bump it up!

  4. I am in the same situation. I am an out of stater. Interviewed with Dean Foxwell on 2/13. I received my hold letter at my permanenet home address, so I am guessing the decision letter will also come to that address. I am really anxious to find out because my boy friend is in Baltimore and although UMAB is not my first choice, still I would strongly consider going there if accepted. Did you write any love letters yet?

  5. Valley Gal got pulled off the waitlist at Columbia and declined her spot at UMAB, so you should all see some waitlist movement soon at Maryland. Last year they oversubscribed the class and there was no waitlist movement at all (which sucked for me as a long-time resident of Maryland and employee of UMAB); looks like this year will be different. For the class of 2004, about 2/3 of those waitlisted eventually got into UMAB. good luck!

Yes I wrote a letter of intent to Dr. Foxwell about a month ago. Kathy in the office told me that a decision should be coming any day now. So keep your parents on the lookout for the letter. It sounds like there could be some possible waitlist movement so I am staying optimistic.

I called Maryland yesterday to see if I could get an update on what in the world "Active Consideration" means in late May. The reply was that basically they haven't even met to accept, reject or hold list me yet after reviewing my application. Oh, yeah, I interviewed in December!

Though my pre-med advisor told me it was a wait list. Sigh. Does anyone have any good information as to what's going on with Maryland?

I just assume that it is a waitlist as well. I did contact Kathie Alascio two weeks ago and she told me that a decision would be made within two weeks. But, I still have not heard anything. I plan on calling later today to try and clarify exactly what all this means. Is Maryland your first choice Jadeite? Have you been accepted anywhere else?

    I'm not accepted anywhere else.

I don't really have a first choice anymore (Pitt was, until I was rejected), there are good things about all my waitlist schools, I'll be happy anywhere I get in.

Anyway I would love to go to Maryland, it's close to home, close to my friends, but it's not cool that I've been waiting to hear from them "Any day now" for 6 months. (Though I guess a lot of people here are in a similar situation.)

Just to let you know, I called and the woman told me that a decision will be made and we should hear in the next two weeks. This after they just told me the same thing 2 weeks ago. Go figure.

I wonder if they're having some legitimate problems? Someone said that once the class was overbooked (and no one dropped.) Maybe that's happening again, or perhaps the computer systems lost everyone's info...

Just to let all that are still on hold and have not received a decision. Kathy just e-mailed me and told me that the decision should be made 'some time soon'. Are they kidding me? What is taking them so long? They need to realize that people have to start looking at housing options and that sooner or later they are royally screwing us! Ok, now that is off my chest.

I got my letter today - LOWER third of the waitlist of 165 applicants. In their words "It is highly unlikely that we will accept anyone from this part of the Wait List."

I must have really went wrong to get that from my state school when I have decent grades (3.84) and decent MCAT (33P). They're really partial to instaters too. Sigh.

I am seriously worried about my ability to interview.

Jadeite, sorry to hear the bad news. I hope that you get in somewhere else. Did the letter go to your house or your parents?

    hey kidz:

i interviewed at umab in december...i didnt hear from them until mid-march...thats somewhere around 15 weeks later...at that time the letter stated that they couldn't make a decision at that time...they had my secondary since september and 15 weeks since my interview...its not like they didnt have any time...and they couldnt even say that i was waitlisted...aaaaahhhhhh...although its some solace that others are in the same boat...buts its not much better...i am in-state and vitals are 3.6/30...i thought i was a competitive applicant...anyways, today i get a letter from them stating that i'm in the middle 1/3rd on the wait-list pool...i have been accepted by a few other schools and am pretty set on going to penn state but i still kinda wanna go to umab cuz its closer to my family and obviously much cheaper...it just irks me b/c of all the bull-ish we have been through...anyways, have a good one folks and good luck jade and everyone else.

Hey, I wouldn't wait for UMB. It's possible you'll get off the wait list, but the middle isn't horrible, at least at Maryland the Dean said one year (was it last year or the year before?) they went half way through the middle tier of the waitlist. Though that might have been unusual. Congrads on the other acceptances!!!

    Thanks for the well-wishing. :)

I have a friend who got accepted to three out of state schools (clearly an outstanding applicant, like you), but was *REJECTED* a few weeks after her interview at her state school. How is that possible? Two of her recs even came from that school.

So don't second-guess yourself, your interviewer may have just had pms that day. : )

Thanks Bikini, I hope one of my other hold lists comes through, but if not, I'm applying to a lot more schools for 2003. Trying to be optimistic. Must... smile... :)

Go Nylee! Providing hope and happiness to waitlisters on the top tier of the maryland list.

    Hey,
I'm sorry you guys are stuck waiting on a decision... :(
I don't know if it's any consolation, but I was accepted to UMAB eight and a half months after interviewing (never waitlisted but received the 'no decision' letter in March.) I ended up withdrawing though, so that's one more acceptance floating around out there... :)

I think that Maryland considers the interviews really strongly, and they really want to hear about why you want to go to UMAB in particular, not just med school... that's something they might want to hear if you write a letter of intent. Sorry for the advice that wasn't asked for - I just had a lot of time to wonder what on earth happened with my application!

Good luck folks... Maryland is a very strong school but there are a lot of great schools out there, and I hope this process works out in everyone's favor.
