what can anyone tell me about this? Is this too *presitigious* a place for me to see if they need manpower at med-student-level research? Any info or tips on this place and how they work would be muchly appreciated. Gracias.

Its just another research institute. I'm sure some junior faculty would be willing to take in a medical student interested in pursuing a research career, especially if you're affiliated with UCSD or Columbia, where Ludwig has a couple of branches.
