I was just curious as to if any of you are interested in pursuing ENT/Otolaryngology as a surgical specialty? If so, what was the main reason for your decision to pursue such. I am a classical musician and I have been fascinated with the voice etc. . . ever since I first started studying voice science/pedagogy in college. I look forward to reading your responses.

ENT is one of the few specialties that involves significant amounts of both surgery and outpatient services. Plus, huge advances are being made in this field at an extremely rapid pace. Cochlear implant technology seems like something out of a science fiction novel, and yet there it is.

It involves a great variety of subjects in a relatively small anatomical area.

Fred, what's your avatar from? Looks eerily familiar, but I can't but my finger on it.

As a kid, I had to visit ENT surgeons atleast once every six months. I am pretty darn healthy now 😀

yeah, but I was always fascinated by the work these surgeons do. You are into music and so you will definitely love this subspecialty.

You've probably seen it in one of two places:

1. From the old Atari game "Adventure". Not the (even older) text version, obviously, but the one where you had to steal a trophy from a castle.

2. From Homestarrunner.com. "Somebody get this freakin' duck away from me!"

I've had a lot of exposure to it as a speech/hearing sciences major. It's cool because the range of surgical procedures you handle as an ENT is very wide. I'm a musician as well and I've actually been doing a research project on the vocal folds. The field, like any other surgical subspecialty, is real big on research and that's another reason I'm drawn to it. I'm really enjoying my project I'm currently working on.

Wanderso, I'm much like you - led to an interest in ENT by classical voice. Such an interesting, cutting-edge field. And I'm also shocked on a daily basis by how much disinformation there is about vocal physiology in the musical community!
