I scheduled an interview at CU last week and I really had a good experience. Anyone else interview there or look into CU for D-school?

yes, I toured Creighton and talked with Dr. Ayers this summer. I also had a pretty good experience. I'm finishing up their secondary application right now, because they say they will begin to review complete application files on october 1st. I hope I say the right things on my app., Creighton is my first choice.

I am very interested in Creighton as well, they have a contractual agreement with Utah called the RDEP program, similar to WICHE. It is in my top 3 (I don't think I'll be able to narrow it down until I visit the schools). What did you guys like about Creighton specifically? Was there anything that you did not like? I'll post my stats but they probably don't mean much cause I'll be in an entirely different applicant pool (RDEP).

I talked to a recruiter and he sounded like they didn't emphasize it. In the Creighton University SOD Bulletin I quote: "Creighton University is by far the most diverse educational institution of its size in the nation. [...] Creighton has a faculty and student body made up of individuals of many races and faiths from every geographical region of the United States and from numerous foreign nations." I think everyone has an equal opportunity to be accepted regardless of religious affiliation. Indeed I hope so because I'm not Catholic either 🙂

I talked with an admin person and she said they want to see a rounded character with christian attributes and an interest in Christ, but no particular religious affiliation. I know they do not enforce conduct codes like Loma Linda. My dentist went there in '86 and wasnt Catholic and didnt say anything other than he thought it was a great school.

You are right, Creighton doesn't send out invites for interviews. I have also been told that they will let anyone come "interview" with them but you have to be the one to initiate and schedule the interview. i acutally called admissions not too long ago to check on the status of my ap. It's complete, but then I also asked if we would be hearing anything about interviews. They lady said "We dont do interviews." We'll hear from them in the beginning of Decemeber. Until then, we have to wait patiently *sighs*

That's why I called it an "Interview" it's more just for you to go and meet the admissions committee (which can never be a bad thing unless you've got things to hide). I personally want the adcomms to remember me come December 1st when they are deciding! When you go out there they will take you on a tour of the facilities, show you around and answer any questions that you have. As far as sitting down and them asking you questions like a traditional D-school interview I doubt that will happen. Don't you think it looks good to them too if you make the trip out there and see what they have to offer? If I was going to accept someone, I would sure like to know that they knew what they were getting themselves into and that the liked it! Anyway, that's just my ideas on being an adcomm.

If you call, I would ask for Dr. Frank Ayers (pronounced "AIRS"), he is the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and the Chairman of the Admissions Committee. Good luck, let me know what they say!

I don't know that it matters since it isn't really an interview in the real sense. If you have time and want to go out there, I think you could do it any time you wanted, however after you have turned in your secondary they may see you as more serious about attending there and pay more attention to you. Pure speculation on my part.

A big advantage that Creighton has is that they don't have any specialist programs there, so as a dental student you will be able to handle every case that comes into the clinic, nothing is sent away to the specialty students.

The previous post was the reason the dentist I shadowed chose Creighton over bigger names like Washington, Baylor and Columbia. He said that while his buddies at other schools had minimum requirements for procedures to graduate he had done that many of the same procedure by the endo of his junior year. I guess it was like 15 years ago but I bet things are still similar. Does anyone know if there are other schools like Creighton that do not have any specialty clinics, besides Arizona, and the really new schools?

To answer a few questions:

1) Though it is a Catholic run school, you don't have to be Catholic. They don't really care, in fact Catholics are in the minority in my class.

2) When you call the admissions office they prefer the term "visitation" instead of "interview". That's probably why they said "we don't give interviews". But at your visitiation you will talk one-on-one with Dr. Ayers, and he will ask you about yourself and he will take a few notes. So it's basically and interview. It doesn't really matter if you do it before or after you turn in your secondary from a personal observation standpoint, but as far as Dr. Ayers committing your interview "information" to your application file, it is probably best to visit after you send in you secondary. And it's not to late to come for a visit. They are usually only on Friday afternoons.

3) The non-specialty aspect of Creighton makes extremely strong dentists. They stress that at other schools with post-docs, you may only get to do 1 or 2 root canals, here you'll do 10-15. It just crazy like that.

Creighton is a great school and I'm glad that I'm here. Let me know if there are any specific questions that I can answer about the school or Ohama.

I think we have 2 people from AZ and 3 or 4 from New Mexico. The winters here aren't really that bad if you are comparing them to winters in Minnesota or the Dakotas. Really depends of the year, some years there really isn't any standing snow on the ground for more than a few days at a time. Others years there will be standing snow all year. Temps in the 20's and 30's.

Omaha itself is about 400,000, but when you add the suburbs it's about double that.

How's the cost of living really like in Omaha???

When I was apartment hunting, the price ranges were from $400 to $700 a month. But the majority are right between $500 and $600 a month. I'm not sure about houses. The loan money is enough to get you through the school year, if you don't have a family that is. I don't have one, so I'm living just fine.

There's no outregious taxes or anything like that. Food, clothes, and gas prices are normal for the midwest. I think things are a bit cheaper here than on the coasts. My only complaint is that there is a lot or road contruction around, but I suppose you get that anywhere.

Yep, Class of 2000.

It's true there really aren't to many of us out here in the dental field. There are 2 others people from SD in my class and they are both from Sioux Falls. I think most SD people go to school at U of Minn.

BTW, if you have any questions about Minnesota, I could probably help you there too. I was accepted there and almost went there, until I decided CU at the last minute.

I sent you a PM. Any questions about rent, you could ask when you are here. Part of the visit is when they put you one on one with a 4th year for the tour. At that time they can fill you in on all the little things you ever wanted to know.

When Creighton came to do pre-health fair at my school I talked to an admission person named Patti Churchill who said that it was advantageous to have someone who went there write you a letter of recommendation. That said she also mentioned that it cannot hurt you to not have one, its just an added bonus if you did. I cant see any admissions committee penalizing you for simply not knowing someone who went to their school. That's my thoughts atleast.

Isn't it more of an "option" to go to the U of U? The way I've heard it presented is that it's more of a convenience that they provide if you'd like to stay another year. As for me I'd rather just move out there to be a DS1. Isn't there the option of doing that as well?

Hey, I was just thinking that myself. Let me know what you think. I was going to try and schedule a "visit" myself so when all those acceptance letter's come pouring in (OOPS sorry daydreaming.) Slap myself, back to reality! I mean when I am happy to have AT least one school pick me!

I got a booklet from Creighton a couple of months and I read where the student is responsible for finding their own patients. I did not find this feature appealing from this school, as there are many other worries d-students have to confront.

Well I went to Creighton today for a "visit". Overall I think CU is a great place. I called up a few weeks ago and scheduled a "visit". They schedule all of their visits on friday afternoons. I met Dr. Ayers (admissions dean) at 2:00 pm. He took me into this big board room and just the two of us talked for about 20 minutes. He was very conversational. Some of his questions were:
1) what makes you think you want to be a dentist?
2) what have you done to prepare for a career in dentistry?
3) why creighton?
4) tell me a little about yourself.
5) do you have any questions for me?

He was a great guy. It was not intimidating at all. He did take some notes as we talked. I met several other applicants there. They were also very friendly.

The tour of the clinic was pretty amazing. Creighton has a great clinic. Well lit. Fresh paint on all the walls. Very clean like in a hospital (not that I expected it to be dirty), but the clinic looked very professional. Some of the current students there said that the classroom learning wasn't as great as they wished it would be, but that the fantastic clinic definately made up for any deficiencies in that area. Most importantly, DS-4 that I talked with said that they had tons of endo and extraction practice that they were very pleased with. One senior that we talked to said that he had so much experience already that he was going to finish his graduation requirements (of clinicals) by december.

I understand that making a "visit" to Creighton is not supposed to influence your chances of acceptance in any way, but I can't believe that sitting down with the dean of admissions face to face does not benefit you. I'm glad I went.

During my tour of the school a current DS4 explained this process to me. He said the school has a huge pool of current patients. The will assign you ~30 or so patients that you must call and schedule appointments with that will fit your schedule. Otherwise you can just go down to the clinic and take the next available walk-in case, or emergency case that comes into the clinic. He made it sound like he prefered the walk-in kind over the emergency patients. He said emergency walkin patients were usually people with very poor dental hygeine and can be difficult to work with.

At any rate he said there was not much difficulty in obtaining all of the patients you wanted to take.

Professionalism is key! Most wear a suit, but you could swing a nice shirt with sport jacket and slacks. It is really up to. But I wouldn't go casaul if I were you. (Everyone else is going to look like they are at a happy funeral. 😱

I wore a suit. Everyone I saw was in a suit. Even though it is really only considered a "visit" to the school, it was treated like an "interview" if you ask me.

Well, I've never really looked at it as an option.

For example, I was flat-out denied for the RDEP program, but I was accepted to Creighton. I don't know if anybody has ever been accepted by RDEP and then chosen to simply go out to Creighton.

Creighton is an excellent school though.
