Do you guys have anything to say about the admissions/competitiveness for these schools...particularly for an out-of-stater...also, anything else about them...I don't hear about them too much on this forum...thanks :)

UMDNJ (New Jersey)
UMD (maryland)
Marquette
Detroit-Mercy (is this private or state?)
UConn (are the big on in staters?)

I can tell you that UMD favors in-staters. I don't think UConn necessarily does, but they do have a very small class size. As far as Az and UNLV, I heard (not know if this is absolutely true though) that since they are new schools, and the only ones in their respective states, that they will favor in-staters or residents of western states w/o dental schools.

Marqet does not interview out of state appliclants, at least that is what they told me. They also requier a $750 deposit to be on their waiting list.

Arizona is just opening next year, I think.

UNLV is starting their first class this year. They are sharing room with the Medical School and also around campus.

I know very little about these schools, I choose not to apply to UNLV and I just heard about Arizona. Any school that dosen't require interviews worries me. I will be at VCU in July and will give you all an honest picture of my 4 years.

Seema,

Here's what I know and can contribute about AZ:

Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health:

1) Dean - Jack Dillenberg, D.D.S., M.P.H.

2) Dental school located in Mesa, AZ

3) The school will focus on producing graduates to target children, elderly and American Indian populations in the underserved areas.

4) Will try to attract and recruit American Indian students -- wants to be the only dental school with the most American Indian dental students!

5) Will use VitalSource, DVD-Rom for textbooks, laptop technology and other most up-to-date technology equipments.

6) EVERY Friday afternoon students will attend "oral health grand rounds" featuring live and key people in dentistry

7) ALL exams will be on Mondays!

8) ALL classes will have PUBLIC HEALTH incorporated in them!

9) No summers off -- 4 years straight through!

10) Fourth-year students will have the opportunities to experience much of their clinical training at off-site/campus at underserved community-based setting and/or even go back to their home states and participate in distance learning!

11) 50 seats in the Entering Class 2003

12) Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health is a college within Arizona School of Health Sciences (ASHS). ASHS is a division of the KIRKSVILL COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE (KCOM)

13) Contact information:

Dean - Jack Dillenberg, D.D.S., M.P.H.

14) Will participate in 2003 AADSAS application cycle starting May 15, 2002 online

Is that enough about AZ? If you would like, I have the physical ariticle that states everything I said here that I got from the Dean himself during the AZ dental conference.

One more thing, Quantumhead, about what you said about UNLV, they don't have a medical school! They do however have a nursing school on campus, maybe that's what their were trying to tell you! Just want to make that clear! NO medical school at UNLV.

Cool? I AM THE INFO GOD!!! :D

To add what Regina posted regarding UNLV and Arizona: both schools are private schools and therefore state residency won't be much of a factor. The caveat is thus: both schools were established to assist the patient/dentist ratio in the respective states and the western states in general.

As Yah-E pointed out, AZ plans on extensively recruiting American Indian students, although this may not be much of a factor for admissions competiveness for several years.

Marquette is a private school...I think they seek people from out of state because they want more people to move to wisconsin... They also like diversity in ethnicity.
UNLV is a public school, but I heard from someone that they don't particularly favor in state because they don't have enough money for that.
As far as Arizona--well YahE said it all!!!

bump 'n' grind :D Thanks guys :p
