I keep reading other threads about people getting phone calls and emails from programs telling them they are ranked to match, many from programs that I interviewed at and am ranking highly. I, however, have not only not gotten emails or calls from my favorite programs but also have not gotten emails from ANY programs. Now, I know that many programs tell more people than they should that they are ranked to match so people shouldn't take ranked to match feedback too seriously. Does this mean that if you don't hear things then you are screwed? I am starting to fear that I messed up all of my interviews or that there is some red flag I dont know about in my application or that I got interviews at a lot of places that I am not competitive for.

Is there anyone who matched last year end up at competitive place that called/emailed other people but not them?

I haven't heard anything either and gone through the same feelings. I think it will be fine - just gotta stay optimistic.

The gift and the curse of this website is the kind of people that seem to be attracted to it, giving good insight on testing but also making the average among us feel small. In many ways its like watching academic porn, but I digress. Looking at that thread of "ranked to match" emails will make anyone sulk, most of the people are talking about Hopkins, MGH and all the big players hoping beyond hope that they will get their #1 program which is also the #1 academic program in the hemisphere (/hyperbole).

Heres the reality, its internal medicine, its more competitive than it was but its still doesn't even approach ortho (or even gen surg for that matter) so don't rank anywhere you would loathe to go and you'll probably walk away from this one. I hope I match in my top 3 and I hope you match in your top 3 that's the best we can do, beyond that you have done all you can that you can put yourself in a position to succeed.

Just rank to YOUR best interests and let the process take care of the rest, not getting a top of ranked to match letters doesn't mean you are in fact not ranked to match, think of it from the PDs perspective some don't know just as well as we don't why break someones heart when no one knows where people will fall on the lists. Our dean of students said that some Duke program had to scramble a bunch of positions 10+ years ago, its just a year to year thing and trends can change.

Above is the pep talk I give myself when not distracted by reading Game of Thrones or playing through Mass Effect waiting for ME3 to come out. It doesn't help too much but its something :).
