NOT SURE

1. what sport do you play?
CLUB BASKETBALL
(WE'RE REALLY COMPETITIVE)

2. how many hours a week do you devote to it?
8 HOURS

3. would you find yourself regretting it 10 yrs down the line if you didn't do it?
HECK YESSSSSSSSS
4. how many other ECs are you a part of???
ONLY 1 OTHER ONE

5. how many hours do you typically sleep?
I NEEEEEEEED MY 8 HOURS

Not currently but during my first two years of ugrad I played D1 baseball. During the fall semester I spent ~ 10 hours per week training but during the spring semester that went up to ~ 25 hours per week (when factoring in travel time to away games). It was ridiculous. We played 60 games during the course of the spring semester and I specifically remember several weeks when I could only attend 2 days of classes because we were on the road. I pretty much taught myself in a hotel room when we were in season. Yes, it was very difficult to keep up with both academic and athletic responsibilities but I would never have given up that oppurtunity in a million years. It was definitely worth the small drop in gpa I experienced each spring and I still graduated with a fairly competitve gpa. As for sleep I too needed my 8 hours and got it except for exam cram time.

1. I'm the starting quarterback for the Boston Celtics
2. 173
3. Yes, because I like doing it. Oh wait, you mean sports.
4. About 47
5. Sleep? What's that?

In all seriousness though - I know a few atheletes at my school who are also "pre-med" and do quite well. They say it's like any other EC (albeit a very time consuming one) in that you just have to learn to manage your time really well, and possibly cut out some other things like social time to some extent.

WTF??? Your a starting QB for a basketball team? Hows that going for you?

1. what sport do you play?

soccer (div III)

2. how many hours a week do you devote to it?

20-25 in practice/conditioning/games alone. much more if you factor in travel time because we had games all over the place, but that was a good time to study usually.

3. would you find yourself regretting it 10 yrs down the line if you didn't do it?

absolutely, 100%

4. how many other ECs are you a part of???

just im ultimate frisbee in the off season... this is really my fault though, i definitely had plenty of time in the off season. i know lots of girls did sororities in season because our day off was the day chapter met.

5. how many hours do you typically sleep?[/quote]

i did well... 6-7 if i stayed on top of my work

I played for three seasons at my old school. Because it was a small engineering/science-only school, someone in the class above you had already taken the classes you were in and was happy to help you with homework, so 10 hour bus rides were study time. The GPA of most of my teammates went up during the season because of this and because of the absolute focus and discipline you had to have. (More free time in off season= more rope to hang yourself with). I had basically zero time to do anything but soccer and studying during the season (engineering school was super hard), but you can handle that for three months a year and the rewards definitely outweighed the sacrifices for me.

Oh crap, they're a basketball team?!?!?!?! Well no wonder my passer rating has been so low. Maybe I can get them to trade me to the Yankees.

I didn't for the first year and a half, my grades sucked. But that was more because I partied a lot, not because I was in a sport. I got my s*** together jr. year

1. what sport do you play?

track and field (D2) in college (i've since graduated)

2. how many hours a week do you devote to it?

in season was about 30, during the off-seasons was about 10-15

3. would you find yourself regretting it 10 yrs down the line if you didn't do it?

Yes! I still regret that I didn't do 2 sports (gymnastics as well)

4. how many other ECs are you a part of???

I was involved in a few other things here and there, but they weren't very time consuming (i.e. about 1 hour per week)

5. how many hours do you typically sleep?
7

I dunno how to break the quote into parts...

1- Collegiate Cycling
2-15-20 hrs, training alone! If you factor travel time it will be way more.
3- Since i'm still racing on the TX circuit, I would def. regret it.
4- I had a crap load of other EC's: Research, tuturoing, 3 club positions, diff walks and rallies, etc.
5- Now that i'm more relaxed about 5-6 hrs, but back then about 3-4 hrs.

I played college football and basketball for two years, then played just football for my final two years. I would routinely spend 30+ a week practicing/watching film/working out. Having the opportunity to play collegiate sports is definitely worth it, to be able to suit up for a college team is an experience not quite like any other. I would regret not taking the chance for the rest of my life.

Even with that commitment, I found time to work, be a TA, volunteer, and get some research experience. And I still found time for about 6 hours of sleep a night. Being an athlete does not hinder academics. In fact, the strict schedule and need to be productive 24/7 actually can be beneficial. With games on Saturday, I always could count on 6+ hours of studying on a Friday night - something I would not do otherwise.

I didn't figure all this out until I was a junior and my GPA paid the price. But I have friends that had no problem going onto grad school despite a huge time commitment. If you want to do this, it can definitely be done.

people who fail to understand how the evolution of the quarterback position has modernized the game of basketball do not deserve to get into med school...

YAY!!!

4 years of college D1. 20+ hours/week.
currently training for 08 Olympic Trials/Olympic Games in Beijing, 30 hours/week.

would I regret NOT doing this? definitely. this has been one of the most telling and poignant commitments I've made...before medicine, that is. :D

I am an athletic training student, but I keep similar hours since I work with the teams (Div I).

1. Work with Basketball right now
2. 40-50 hours not including travel (we are there at least an hour before and an hour after the athletes are)
3. Yes, I love every minute of it.
4. EMT, shadowing, clinic work, research, clubs, ...
5. 7-8

I always laugh when athletes say that they have no time, just think about everything that the trainers have to do in addition to your schedule.

Athletes really keep me going though, always really appreciative and enthusiastic!

(4) research (2 labs), shadowing, clubs
(5) between 6 and 9

You can find time for fun. It's all about being efficient. When I'm studying, I'm making the most of my studying time (no distraction from friends, etc). When I'm out having fun on a saturday night, I don't think "oh I should be studying". I just enjoy the time I have to have fun and get up sunday morning and go to the library.
I run cross-country and track on a nationally-ranked DIII team. I'm also captain of my team and involved in volunteering and research. It's all about finding those things that you love and devoting what time you have to them. If you spend your volunteering time worrying about studying or your class time thinking about your upcoming game, it's not going to work out for you.
That being said...my gpa has certainly taken a hit from athletics, especially my sophomore year when classes got harder. I learned how to study better and manage my time well and it all ended up okay.
Good luck!
