Hi,
I really need some advice on how to improve my chance of getting into medschool. I made a D in my organic chem class but retook it and made an A gOT 5 C's and a 3.28 GPA. I really need to know if there is any postbac program that would help for my GPA? THANK SO MUCH

It will be tough getting into an allopathic school with that GPA, unless you are an URM. You still have a shot at the osteopathic schools. Note that your GPA will be slightly higher for these schools, as that D will be replaced with the A for organic. Maybe you can retake some of those C's and boost your GPA into the 3.4-3.5 range, then you'll be very competitive for osteopathic schools. Also, rock the MCAT.

I'm taking a year off after graduation. Should I apply to a postbac program to improve my chance of getting into medschool. I know it will extremely hard to get into allos school, but is it still possible to get in? What should i make on the MCAT?? Thanks for the advice

Maybe you can add another undergrad major? Some double majors I know are in a 5 year program. This could give you more time to bring up the GPA, build some clinical experience, and take the MCAT if you haven't already done so. Your best bet is to speak with your advisor or pre-med advising office if your school has one. I hope this helps!

and the MCAT - my advisor told me to aim for > 30.

Yes, you can do a post-bacc. I would do it on my own and take a bunch of upper level science courses (30 credit hours or more) and try to get as close to a 4.0 as possible. Your other option is to apply for and do an SMP. You'd get a Master's degree out of it and you'd take first-year med courses. Your current GPA (3.2) is probably good enough to get into an SMP, maybe at Georgetown or one similar.

Also, as another poster said, you're competitive for osteopathic medical schools and that D won't be factored into your GPA there. So that's an option.

Well, if I get in, I'm getting in with a C- in ochem (one semester of it, not retaken), and a 3.1 GPA for undergrad. So... I'm hoping it's possible! and with 12 interviews, I think it should be, but we'll see. But as my profile shows, I did a masters program and worked multiple really great clinical, medical, international volunteer stuff and jobs... but i do think it is possible... just a little eccentric.

What master degree did u talk about MedStudentWanna? DO u have the website?

To Maydak,
I did an internship at a local hospital during the summer for 255 hrs. Do u know any international volunteer stuff that i could apply to do druing my year off?

Can u guys recommend any post-bacc programs that i should look at??
Thanks so much for the help

You made up for your low undergrad really well. TA at MIT and Harvard. wow 😀

To the OP: Getting in with a 3.28 is possible. In fact you might not even have to do a post bacc...this really depends on your MCATs.

34+ on the MCAT might be a "get out of jail card", especially if you apply really early.

But realistically if you hae 28-34 on your MCAT, I would apply to med school while you are doing a post bacc program. I think you should be able to get into a postbacc (your gpa is fine to get in, check the post bacc forums on the good postbacc programs out there). Some SMP/postbacc assure you an interview if you maintain a certain GPA with them..

why not retake the organic chemistry classand get an A or something?

Boyfriend got a C followed by a C- in two semesters of orgo, I believe. Or some slight variation on that theme. Overall undergrad GPA was 3.28, science a lot lower than that. His post-bacc's not so hot either, 3.36, but could be worse. Has a 33 MCAT. He at least has a bunch of interviews... we'll see how they go. So, I think you can do it.

A) It will help if you have a good state school,
B) you didn't mention your MCAT score, but it should make a HUGE difference for you, because it could tell them that you just had some bad times, so do well!!,
C) just B alone won't solve all your problems... because you mention 5 Cs, a post-bacc might be appropriate... Find some one year master's program somewhere.... You can search on AAMC's website, among others.,
D) can't be stressed enough: *APPLY EARLY*. And to a lot of safeties, nothing fancy. Don't go shooting for something that you think might be a stretch, pre-post bacc, at least. You might not even need a post-bacc if the rest of your grades are absolutely solid, you've a good MCAT score, a good excuse, and apply really early to a lot of safety schools.

Good luck! It can be done.

I got 6 C's and a 3.2 flat. I did grad work and got good letters, ECs, ok MCAT, and applied early. You can do it.

What SMP/Postbacc allow u to do that? Do u have the link?

Does anyone have the link to the postbacc forum? I can't find it Thanks

Sorry, I have a 3.29 and can't help ya...

But seriously, a 3.28 is not a deal breaker. I'm in and had a couple of C's (One in intro bio! I know... I know...) My advice though is if you are still an undergrad is to simply do the best you can. Even if a quarter/semester of As doesn't raise your GPA too much, it still looks good, particularly if it involved difficult coursework.

Just do your best.
