I will be applying to medical school and will be graduating from UC Bekeley. I just wanted to get a feel for how grads from UC Berkeley do. So, if you graduated from Cal can you please help me out. Stats would be real nice like GPA, MCAT, significant activities, where you interviewed, and finally where you got in.

Sorry for being so demanding. feel free to leave out any info you do not want to give. the more the better. thanks!!

GO BEARS!🙂

I think Berkeley's premed website has a listing of the individual MCAT/GPA of all applicants from their school, and their results. It was posted like a year ago, and all scores were pretty high. You might want to look for that.

Or...

AMCAS usually sends a copy of the results of applicants to every school's premed office. At UCLA, I went into the counseling office and asked for the list and was able to look at it... it had every applicant from UCLA, their stats, with a breakdown of SGPA, GPA, VR, PS, BS, WR, plus the school the applicant was accepted at. The names were obviously omitted though.

nikoo, I PM'd you

hmm. I love to help out fellow bears  except I don't feel giving out my info would help you. Do you have a more specific question? feel free to send me a PM.

btw, ask the Career Center for a handout listing the 20 most popular schools Cal students applied to. It was nice to know where bears were welcome 🙂

I would be very skeptical of what you see on the career center website as far as averages for individual schools. Those numbers are complete b.s because they are for the most part, self-reported by extreme overachievers. So don't be scared.

The one thing that is useful is a matrix they have with gpa on one axis and MCAT on another. Poke around for it, and it gives you a good idea. I just graduated two weeks ago (MCB-BMB-honors), 3.45 overall, 3.75 since 2nd semester soph, 11V/14P/12B/S, experience at Alta Bates, and an author of a science paper. I applied late in the process (bad idea!!!!!!!!) and had 7 interviews including two top ten programs. In at 2 top 40 schools, but hoping on Davis or USC+$. Most schools are friendly with Berkeley people and give more leeway on gpa, especially plan 1 MCB people. Plan 2 is iffier, but overall there is still a bit of leeway since so few people get A's here (15%/class?).

I can't speak for all of my classmates who graduated from Berkeley, but there are about 24 or so in my class of 141. That is pretty good. I graduated from Berkeley in 2001. I was a transfer student and started there in 1999 and majored in Nutritional Science and Toxicology. I won't go into the specifics of my application b/c they really don't matter all that much for you or anyone else. Just wanted to let you know that UCSF definitely has a thing for both Cal and Stanford.

Good luck.

in sdn fashion, why don't YOU post your stats? 😀 i don't go to cal but i have several friends that do and are currently applying right now. pm me if u have any questions.

It's embarassing that our acceptance percentage is basically at the national average. I thought we were supposed to be the #1 public school 🙄

I'm applying from Cal, but I'm a non-trad, and I went to Cal for grad school, so I'm probably not in the same pool/boat

#1 public school? usually it's up for grabs between UVa, Berkley, and UMich, no? (this is not the point, i know, but i was just curious.) 😉

up for grabs? i think the point is that berkeley never vies for the #1 stat, but always gets ranked first anyway. i think VA is also ranked first, but the students i meet from there always have something against us, whereas cal grads have rarely heard of the VA school

anyway, as a cal grad i can say that i have rarely seen berkeley students at my seven interviews. i've seen (from california) mostly davis and ucla kids. it's true that ucsf gives us love, but you still have to have performed really well to be considered, and i think that with berkeley's curriculum being so tough, it's hard to show that you've done well.

therefore, here is my advice to you: keep your gpa above 3.5, and score above a 30 on the mcat. shadow a doctor through the health and medical apprenticeship program (it's a semester-long thing). attempt research or labwork during some summer, and study abroad if you can (i'm sure you're already finishing up your year, but it's still good to know). from berkeley, academics is, in my opinion, by far the most important factor in your getting in
