I was just wondering what your thoughts would be on my dilemma.
I have a 3.6 gpa/3.4 sci. gpa (finishing college in three years), and I will be applying next year. Here's the thing, though. I live in South Florida with my fiancee. She will be taking over her fathers business so she will probably stay there. There are only two schools in florida (NOVA and U. of Florida).

Do you guys think that I could apply to just those to schools and get accepted, at least to NOVA. I haven't taken the DAT yet but anticipate scores of 21s and 22s (I'll have all next summer to study).

If I don't get in I am planning on taking a accelerated 1 year M.B.A. while waiting for the next application cycle.

Do you guys think this is realistic.

Not sure about MBA. Dont they usually require two years of work experience? Which business schools are u applying to?

I think it will be tough, especially without a degree.
Anyway, apply now and take your DAT soon

im sure youll get an interview to UF... and if there is a problem theyll tell you in a not so nice way 🙂

Whose to say whether it is realistic or not. *I* certainly wouldn't apply to only two schools.

If your goal is really to become a dentist then I would suspect that you would put as much effort into the process as possible. What I'm hearing from you is: I'll apply to only two schools so I can stay in the area, and if that doesn't work I'll get an MBA and then apply again later.

That doesn't seem to motivated, although all I know about you is what you'd given in your post.

i agree with ecdoesit, it would be tough to get in without a degree under your belt.

Thanks for the replies

I've been hearing alot of bad stuff about U. of Florida, and the interview feedback on this forum makes U. of Florida look like rude little kids. What's the deal.

I actually leaning torwards NOVA for a few reasons.
1) It's right down the street from where I live.
2) Nice new program.
3) I will be able to stay near family and friends.

Me and my fiancee have already been going to seperate colleges for two years and were not really looking forward to continuing that, if you know what I mean.

And by the way, I will have a biology degree. Sorry if I didn't put that in my original post.

Oh and Gavin,

I can see how you would think that, but I assure you that I am sincere about becoming a dentist I have been shadowing different dentists since 10th grade and it's the only thing I would ever imagine doing.

I was just going to use that first year as a "get lucky year". I will probably aplly to more schools in the southeast the year after. I'm only 19 so I'm not exactly rushing to get into dental school.

Thanks for your reply.

Salty,

I found myself in a situation similar to yours. I only applied to one school, actually (I'll let you figure out which). It didn't have anything to do with a lack of motivation. Like you, I simply had other factors playing into my decision, and also like you, I had a fairly enviable job opportunity to fall back on if my application fell through. Particularly, applying to your public in-state school boosts your chances of getting in. Just polish yourself as much as possible, and hope for the best after that. Dentistry is a great profession, but it's not the only great profession by any means. Good luck! 😀
