is applying early as big of an advantage as it used to be? Now that the mcat is offered so much it seems to me that more people will be applying early. Anyone else think so?

If more people are applying early, then it makes it even MORE important.

I think it is just necessary to apply early. There is no advantage other than when you apply late, your late with interviews and the like. Early=safer
