im a junior but my gpa is 3.0 because i 've been lazy. But i gonna work to get it up. But if i did apply today with a 3.0 do you think i would get accepted to most colleges

You should be fine to your state college. Unless you are a huge gunner applying to Ivies and Top 20s

It depends, at my state school, I don't think you would get into the main one based on other people who I know that didn't get into it. However, if you did have an upward trend in GPA and decent SAT scores, that may make a difference. A 3.0 is good enough to get into a lot of good, decent schools though, maybe not ivies, but definately good enough to reach your goals.

You can always go to your State or City school for a year or two, get a very high GPA and transfer to somewhere you really want to be if the place your already in is not a good fit for you.

It depends on your SAT a 3.0 and 2400 SAT will get you into most schools; a 3.0 and 1500/2400 will get you into godawful ones. GPAs are jokes and with the exception of a few schools i.e. prep schools an A is given out essentially for showing up. A 3.0 would not be competitive for most decent state schools without decent i.e. a balanced 1800 SAT.

I dont really think a 3.0 and a 2400 will get you into most schools because it raises a lot of questions...i personally had a friend who had an 80 average (3.2 ish) and a 2250+ SAT score, good SAT II scores and was rejected to many places.

If you want to go to a "good" school, your best bet is to transfer.

The only way i would understand possible if you got into say a top ranked school, would be if you were top 2% with your 3.0 GPA, and your SAT scores were very high.

Also even if you were like ranked 400/650 with your 3.0 GPA, and had very high SAT scores...its also better for you to transfer, because freshman in college, or sophomore trying to transfer more emphasis is put towards your SAT scores and your college GPA (which if it is high can show you have become much more serious since high school)

You would be shocked how many schools will take a chance on a bright slacker. However a 3.0 is not terribly competitive unless you're coming out of prep school that's an entirely different story.

I would agree with this only if the "bright slacker" had a lot of EC's, was involved in many things and had great personal statements/ recommendations but has shown great improvement through the years or legitimate explanations to grades.

I would'nt agree they would get into the best of schools if it were the case that there grades were declining, or they never had say a 4.0 semester or something like that...meaning 3.0 might be overall, but lowest may have been a 2.0 where as highest may have been 4.0 (towards the end of the school years).

I believe rank also has a lot to do with this. My cousin went to a school where gpa's really werent that high. There valedictorian had i think a 3.3 or 3.4 gpa with not so stellar SATs but was still able to go into Dartmouth, a school which is shown to accept the most val's and sal's of all colleges and universities. So where as i would rarely ever associate a 3.0 with the word competitive in regard to gaining admissions at Top schools, if it were in the top percent (which is why i suppose they ask for rank and percentile on college apps or common app) that could be a reason to overlook such a number.

My brother...
Probably the most lazy person on earth.

He had a 2.7. My mom filled out his college application and wrote his essay.

He got into a four year university.

Oh, and he's so lazy she even did his housing form -- the thing were you tell about your habits so you can get a good roommate. L0L. (that aside, he likes his room mate)

Also, make sure you always do the "optional" things like some universities make essays optional some don't. I think his my moms essay is what helped him.

This is one of the true WTFs. Thank you for sharing.

Ahem... I've heard of a guy whose mom filled out his Common App for him. He now goes to an Ivy.

~Jim Morrison

This is a good quote for those helicopter parents.
