I have some questions for current students and accepted students that are from out of state trying to get NY in-state residency. I just got into Downstate and I plan on living off campus for 12 months in order to qualify for in state tuition next year(soph year). Since my parents do not work in New York, they do not have have any NY income tax to report, so does that mean I must apply as an Emancipated student in order to get NY residency? And if that is the case, do I need to find a job in New York while I am in med school, so that I can report my NY state income taxes? Obviously I am not financially independent and I rely on my parents financially...can I still qualify for NY residency? Is there a loophole for full time students?

Any help is appreciated, I'm sure I'm not the only one with this question!
