According to chart 13 page 31 of this publication by nrmp, about half of the rad onc applicants applied to more than one specialty (taking transitional year into account). Why is there a myth that rad onc applicants only apply to one specialty?

Among all those who were also applying to other specialties besides Rad Onc, only 5 applicants had Rad Onc as NOT first choice. I guess that means there were a lot of applicants applying to other specialties as back up. Is that really a myth? Looks like Rad Onc was the second most competitive specialty behind Ortho in 2012 (based on % US seniors unmatched).
