Applying to work with more than one POI?

Hi!

I am hoping to get feedback on a couple questions regarding where to apply (I am currently making my list of potential POIs):

1. If I am interested in applying with more than one POI at a university, would you recommend e-mailing both POIs to see whether they are accepting a student?

2. Does anyone have experience applying to a program (e.g. clinical), but have a major interest in working with a faculty member who is only affiliated with the clinical program (e.g., primary appointment in developmental or other department)? I have a few programs like this and I was wondering whether it is best to e-mail the affiliated professor first or to also identify a faculty member in the clinical area for research purposes. Has anyone successfully been accepted to work under an affiliated faculty member?

Yes, a lot of people in my program have advisers who are experimental faculty.
