Are people who have license plates that read "MD2B or MD1DAY" pretentious?

I've noticed plates like that here in DC and in California. Is it pretentious for a medical student to proclaim to all that can see that he/she will be a doctor? What about doctors that have DOC or DR personalized plates?

Yes, and it's also silly 'cause you'll have to get a new plate if/when you do get your MD.

Speaking of doctor's cars, I've seen in New York that there's special "MD" plates you can get; and in the UK I'm told that physicians have access to cars with green lights and sirens for emergency use... anyone know of other vehicle-related perks in medicine?

The Dean of Admissions at University of Miami has a licence plate which says "MDMaker". I've always thought that was kinda funny. 🙂

nOT SURE REAL FRIEND I THINK NOBODY KNOWS AND WERE JUST AGREEING WITH ME BECAUSE IM A GOOD LEADER

I think these plates are well suited when used for good.
anyone remember the seinfield episode with the "assman" plates?
that was a good one.

It's pretentious, although I like the ASSMAN plate! If I was a proctologist, I'd consider something wacky like that.

If you wanna be proud to be a student, get a sticker from your medical school's bookstore and slap it on your window. That's being proud of your status as a med student AND your school without being TOO vain or pretentious.

Don't you think? 🙂

Ya beat me to the punchline dakotaman =)

But yeah, its really pretentious.

A plate like that would make me think the driver was probably a pretentious dingus.

Having plates that identify you as a doctor is a bad idea. It encourages vehicle break-ins by people looking for script pads or meds.

real friend, this is according to dictionary.com:

pre??ten??tious:

Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.
Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious. See Synonyms at showy.

You might as well get a plate that says SUEME.

exactly what i was thinking. Ask ckent about his little "run-in" with an opportunist who saw him wearing his white coat at a crosswalk.

You obviously do. Why else would you get a vanity plate?

I second JBJ and carrigallen. In the event of a car accident, I sure as hell wouldn't want anyone to know I was a doctor. (Unless, of course, someone was hurt ...)

I seem to disagree with the majority here. I know a doc who's license plate is "SAY AHHH"

I think it's cute😀 It would be like anyone else displaying their interests on their license plate. It also shows individuality. and, it really isn't all that big of a deal!😀

Who cares what anyone else has on their license plate?

MD vanity plates are no more a magnet for lawsuits than driving a Mercedes or a Lexus or a BMW is. And how many of you turning up your noses at vanity plates won't hesitate to drive a nice car when you can afford one?

My childhood optomitrist had a licence plate that said

ICU

and his other car said

ICU 2

I thought that was clever.

I have a confession----I have one of those plates. My husband bought me a new car right before I started medical school and got me the cheesy plate as a surprise. At first, I felt strange with it, but you know what? We've been married 17 years, I've waited a long time to do this, and he was proud as heck of me, so I'm happy to drive it. It's got nothing to do with being pretentious--it's just fun. I DON'T plan on getting one in the future after I graduate, but for now it's kind of fun.

Oh, and by the way, the plate reads: MD2BN06

I know----makes you cringe, doesn't it. 😀

I think the intention behind the plate is what matter. If you have a plate like those already mentioned just because you want to be pretentious or boastful then it is a stupid idea but if you are just "cazy" and want to make people laugh or something you think of because you can come up with anything else then it is ok. The only thing is you might attract thieves as somebody pointed out.

Laura JC, your situation is different. You didn't buy the plate! You're forgiven! 😉

LOL! Besides, I was just thinking--nobody could POSSIBLY look at me in my car with my plate and think me pretentious anyway---it's a chevy cavalier. Not exactly envy-inducing. (although I love it, it's small and reliable.)

I didn't get an MD vanity plate but I did get a vanity plate. It reads "UCLA1". I love my undergrad school. I wanted "GO UCLA" or just "UCLA" but they've already been taken in Virginia.

I am wondering what you all think about the much more common practice (already mentioned) of putting your college or medical school sticker on the rear windshield. Drive into any upper class suburb and the number of Volvo station wagons with Andover Academy, Stanford University, UPenn Medical School is enough to make me a little quesy at the smug superiority of it all.

What do you think: is it poor taste or OK?

My opinion is that it's okay! I say do what ya want. If you like it, go for it. If you think it is "poor taste" don't do it!😛

I'm not too impressed with vanity plates that brag about something. Here is Calif, we see "MD2B" and "JD2B" all over the place. Get the nose down and out the stick outta your butt. I am proud of my profession, but come on: docs and attys and so on are a dime a dozen (at least here in Calif.).

(And why is it whenever I see a license plate that has anything to do with "NV" that I do NOT envy whatever they are bragging about!)

Cheers
