I'm currently a freshman and am planning to take a couple of courses over the summer. Should I do anything else besides that like volunteering in a hospital. Are there any health related summer programs for freshman?

Try an EMT course, it is only about a month long and you can work as an emt during college part time. It looks great on your application when you apply to med school.

A lot of school of medicines have summer programs that you may be eligible for. There is the SMEP... Summer Medical Education Program (formerly known as MMEP or as HCEM at Case Western) and others if you take the time to research online. Good luck and props to you for your interest!
