I've been pretty anxious about this whole pre-med process because I don't have the strongest GPA from undergrad. I am doing my pre-reqs as a post-bac. But I found this article from the NY Times to be encouraging...it's about a "boom" in med schools...about 24 schools are just opening up or in the process.

I was wondering if there might also be a new Osteo schools opening up?

Yeah, there will definitely be new osteo schools in the future. However, my thought was that the AAMC quota was going to struggle to be met because of the economy and cutting class sizes, not having money to start new schools, etc.

Ditto, that's super close to where I grew up.

In 2012 Marian University in Indiana is going to open a new school.
Also, Western is going to open a branch campus 2011 in Oregon.

I also believe we need one in Alaska. Such a big state with NO medical schools.

This is a short sighted approach to fixing the ills of our medical system. American healthcare is excellent. The actually care you get in the USA is better than any other country. The part that is broken is the financial aspect of healthcare. An average person with a major illness or accident can become bankrupt, which doesn't happen in other parts of the world.

Why on earth should Alaska open a medical school up? There is no money there, no significant academic health care institutions, or enough people to train physicians there. An awful lot of politics, resources and money are required to train even the least specialised physicians. There should be federal restrictions that limit the creation of new medical/professional schools to enforce strict educations standards and ensure adequate GME. There should be far fewer DO schools and no new ones opening up. DO schools are starting to pop up like weeds and the branch campuses is getting out of control. If you can't get into an existing institution you shouldn't be going to medical school in my opinion. Good luck with your applications.

One shouldn't have to relocate 1000's of miles if they don't want to. If you're an Alaskan you better take out a small loan to cover interviewing costs.

I think Alaska would benefit from a med school personally...

Well I suppose they could always just cross the Bering Strait and go to school in Russia.

Is it even easier to get into new medical schools. I understand that people are less likely to attend but does that really lower the competition that much?
