Are these classes good enough for med school?

-English 1101
-English 1102
-Asian Humanities
-Ethics
-Philosophy
-Pre-world history
-French Revolution
-Intro to entrepreneurship
-College Algebra
-A&P 1
-Psychology
-Sociology
-Chemistry for today (pre-req)

-Intro to statistics
-General Chemistry(with lab) 1,2
-Organic Chemistry(with lab)1, 2
-Biology1: cellular processes
-Biology2: diversity
-General Microbiology
-General physics 1,2
-Cell biology (with lab)
-General Genetics (no lab)
-Introductory Biochemistry
-Pre-calculus & Trig (both in one class)

Am I missing anything or have something in there that I don't need?
If this is how my schedule should look from now on..i'm totally fuked with social life..

This looks great to me. The only recommendations I can imagine would be "Intro to Statistics", "Intro to Psychology", and one more social science course, as some schools ask for these too. A nutrition course would be cool if you had time, too, but it is NOT required, just helpful.

Crap, totally forgot to include my sociology, psychology and statistics in there LOL. The exact ones you mentioned, i forgot to put in -,-

Instead of ethics I would recommend bioethics. Cool class. Also I am not very sure about those Asian humanities. Sound really boring to me.

bold=finished
Do you still recommend me to take that class though? Man, i have so much classes already to take good god..
Those two classes were the easiest A's i've ever made in my LIFE, and prolly easiest i'll EVER make. I myself literally taught the whole class for god sakes...

Oh my bad.

I liked it. It may be useful for some trickier interview questions especially if your applying to a school that does mini-interviews. You may just read a book but I would never finish it if I didn't have a test to study for.

You list of classes seems decent. Make sure you focus on extracurricular activities and personal statements as that makes a big chunk of your application as well.

Why would he want to take more calc? If the OP loves Calc I, sure, take II and III for fun, but for med school applications, additional calculus means exactly nothing for the vast majority of schools.

Ya, i was wondering about the calc as well. I personally am good at math, but don't like math. Figured i could use the time to do some EC's.

The main problem with most of those courses is that it'll be like 2 years to finish all those courses, cause of the prereqs. And I'm sure i cannot take like 4x science courses in a semester, that's just asking for low GPA :/

Feels like my advisor made me waste my first two years of college...

What is your major? I don't understand why you didn't start with gen bio or chem fresh year.

+1. I find it a little unusual that you haven't at least gotten partway through these. 😕

Wait, what about your two semesters of general chemistry?

Reason why I haven't even started my gen chem freshmen year was because I let my trusty(not srs) advisor help me choose my schedule. Seems to me that she only was concentrating on getting me an AA, so i can transfer to a university. I should have taken gen chem freshmen year with gen bio..But instead i listened to her and took a bunch of class that med school doesn't even require.

EDIT: Question, is college chem 1 the same as general chem 1? (CHM-1045 vs CHM 2045). I assume they aren't, not sure why 2045 isn't avail in my CC.

You're covered with your math with the possible exception of HMS (their new admission requirements are kind of ambiguous, imo). Personally, I took a full year of statistics and no calculus, which will prevent me from applying to certain schools......so you're much better off.

You basically have the exact remaining courses that I have to take. I plan on CLEPing out of Calc and Gen Chem. Have you looked into your school's CLEP standards? If not, you can ask your advisor. Saves a lot of time and cash and you say your good with math, so it's worth looking into.

It's not really that they're different, just that your intro to chem course is probably a slowed-down version of gen chem. You'll probably do pretty well in gen chem 1, given that the material is fresh for you.

What exactly is clep'ing? College placement test? I thought the CP test was only to get INTO general chemistry, encase you didn't have a high school background of chemistry?

EDIT: Just looked it up. hmmm, what if i do very bad on the test? Will it show up as a grade or will med school see it?

The grade will be on your transcript, but won't affect your GPA. I'm not sure exactly the consequences of failing the exam other than not being able to take it again for a few months, but I'm pretty sure It still won't affect your transcript. You should definitely look into it if you wanna save time though. I have haven't registered for the test yet, but I'll let you know the process and consequences of failure in the future if your interested.

P.S. I totally agree about advisers. I learned so much about med school through this site that I never even heard of before.

Awesome, thanks. If the exam itself is pretty easy and won't show up in my transcript if i faill it, then i might as well take it then. Even though I'll be done with most of my pre-reqs this summer/spring anyways. I've never always been good at teaching myself though lol 😛

Add a cooking class in there or something to have some fun (and save money later on food as a broke med student!) 🙂

*Oh, and you forgot racquetball

On a serious note, did you really not have any of those sciences in your first two years? and you've taken all of your humanities already? Is that how your university does it or did you decide to do it that way?

I'm not sure If I can say anything about the difficulty of the exam, but easy might be a stretch lol. I'm use to self teaching myself, but I plan on going to my school and gf to help tutor me. You can do it! Hope you knock the classes out. It's a long road for me since I don't have any financial assistance. =/

That's really how my CC counselor told me to do it :/
I just REALLY REALLY wish I had come on SDN or seen my university counselor a lot sooner(instead of CC counselor) for help with class choice so I am not so far behind in science courses.

EDIT:Well I did have to take some prep classes in 1st year. I was out of school for almost 1-2 years due to some financial and family problems, so i thought it would be best if i take some prep courses to prepare me for college again.

Your overall class list is good, just make sure you get all the basic sciences that most closely relate to the MCAT out first so you have that knowledge before you take the MCAT.

Would you mind telling me which ones they are 😛?

At this point, I think you need to really focus on your math skills if they need polishing up. You need to know intermediate algebra, basic trig, and basic statistics to do well in the science courses.

Also, khanacademy.org has been a good resource for me for learning new material, especially math. Hopefully you will find it equally helpful.

Good luck.

Also find out how your intro to statistics will transfer over to your university if you haven't transferred already. My gf is a med major as well and it didn't transfer too well cause it supposedly wasn't the " same kind" of statistics she was suppose to take that she took in CC. Advisers...pff..lol

Really nice site! Thanks for the post.

Unfortunately, most of the science classes that you have remaining will show up somewhere on your MCAT. That means you'll probably have to start studying and take your MCAT while you are still taking some of them. But some of the core ones for each section are:

MCAT physical sciences: physics I&II, general chem I&II
MCAT biological: intro bio I&2, organic chem I&II, and then my adviser told me awhile ago that you don't absolutely need them but biochem, genetics, and microbio can be helpful for MCAT bio (my adviser said biochem/genetics equally as important with micro not being quite as important).

Thank you for the tip! I have already taken intermediate& college algebra, and will be finishing pre-calc this semester in a month.
And yep, i love khanacademy.org!

I have the same classes god has to take. I was told to focus mostly on Pre-reqs and then study for MCAT. Can you take a look @ my thread " bad student to successful md possible?" thread and tell me your opinion if i should just solely focus on pre-reqs, or study MCAT alongside? Thanks🙂
