This question is for dental students, would appreciate a reply:

Does taking upper division biology courses like microbiology, molecular, biochem, etc. really help in the first two years of dental school? Does it become more like a review or what. And if they do really help, which courses would you most recommend? Plz reply, for some reason, ppl in the dental forum always ignore my questions, i guess they my questions are stupid, but how 'bout helpin a brother out for a change?

Any of those classes will help you out and make 1st yr a little less stressful. Physiology, biochem, and micro I'd say are particularly helpful. It won't quite make the classes in dental school a 'review' but it'll help.

To answer your initial question..yes, we are actually that group of sadists so called dental students. Your second question deals with what undergraduate courses to take. I suggest that you take a course in histology, vertebrate physiology, comparative or better yet, mammalian anatomy, biochemistry is extremely important, and cell biology. The first two years of dental school will be more enjoyable if you have a bit of a background in these general areas because you will spend less time learning the basics and more time mastering your class I amalgam prep on #30.
Just as an aside, a course in business administration would never hurt as most dental schools do not give any formal course in the business of dentistry. So if you have an extra slot available before you get your BS, then take a business course.
What schools are you considering?

Biochemistry, Physiology, Histology, Immunology, Anatomy, Microbiology...and any classes to help you with hand-skills.

Oh, and yes, I'm a dental student. =) When you get an interview at UCLA, drop me a line and you can ask me whatever you want before/after your interviews.
