What opinion does everyone have of Argosy University Orange County (specifically)? I have applied to their PsyD program, but I have heard conflicting information on the school and the entire degree program on this site. Am I wasting my time? I prefer clinical work vs research, which is what made PsyD stand out to me. I hope to attain a HPSP scholarship/military internship and commission in the military as a Clinical Psychologist. Prestige means nothing to me, only a proper education and a commission. But I don't want to be passed over by the military due to my choice in school or degree program. Any info would be great.

I can't speak to Argosy in particular, but the military/DoD route is popular among PsyDs--presumably because the higher pay during the early years and potential for loan repayment upon re-enlistment can really help offset high levels of debt.

Edit: That being said, the issues that Jon raised are worth your serious consideration. PsyD options are not necessarily in place for people to avoid research. In fact, lack of research will only bite you in the butt when you attempt to apply for internship. This is definitely true for civilian sites and prob true for military options, as well.

So I get that Argosy is a no go. I have received a lot of input from this site and it is much appreciated. My goal is to commission in the military as a Clinical Psychologist and I'm trying to find the right path.

I see from other posts I have read that Alliant is similar, but perhaps not as bad. I wish I had the flexibility and the GPA to look around the country and find the best program. Unfortunately I have an undergrad of 3.2 (getting a degree while on active duty is rough), because I just wanted to graduate and didn't mind if I even got a C. I'm also 30, on active duty, own a home, married, and have two kids. Now I'm in my last semester and my options for graduate schools are very limited. I plan to take the GRE in after the semester is over, but even a high score can not erase my GPA.

At this point, I have to look at a local professional school with lower admission requirements. I hate to sell myself short, but if I were to show up to a highly competitive school with my scholastic record they would laugh me out of the room.

I have been advised to get an MA and keep my grades up to show the effort to make it into a PsyD or PhD program. It sounds good, and it's a viable option, but in order to pay for it I will most likely extend on active duty and still not be able to excel enough to keep my grades up. I'm saving my 9/11 GI Bill for a doctorate program, so Alliant seems like a good idea... right?

My real plan is to get an HPSP scholarship so someday all I will have to worry about is going to school until I finish my doctorate. I'm just not sure if its possible!

Thoughts?

MOD NOTE: You already posted an identical thread for another CA school. Normally I would move both to WAMC because you are asking about viability, but since it involves HPSP, I just combined your threads. -t4c

I would definitely advise against selling yourself short. The GPA issue can be addressed by the MA option. I don't know how it works for military psychologists, but where you get your degree can really limit your options in the civilian world. There is also the financial aspect related to unfunded programs. Coming out with $150K in debt will offset any benefit you will receive from a higher paid military internship and 1st service year (as compared to a postdoc).

OAN (for the moderator) would it be useful to make a combined thread for people to ask about specific programs they are considering? It is a popular topic and this info could probably be useful to the next person considering Argosy (previous thread) or Alliant....
