Have any of you Army HPSP students do an ADT in the summer at the *beginning* of your third year???? I know that most students squeeze in their two ADT's near the end of their 3rd year / beginning of their 4th year, but I noticed on the HPSP website that there are a few rotations available specifically for 3rd year students at some of the smaller clinics/community hospitals.

I figured it would be stupid to just do school orders and do nothing if I can squeeze in another rotation somewhere on Uncle Sam. Can anyone who has done this comment on any of the rotation sites?

Those are primarily for USHUS student to do 3rd year rotations. The Army will only pay for ONE ADT per academic year. You do not want to waste that on a piss ant rotation at a little community hospital that won't get you toward your goal of residency WHERE you want to go.

Learn this lesson now young grasshopper: You will never screw over the military, they will always bend you over and make you smile while they check your prostate, and tonsils via the same orifice. (Army has been fair to me and I can't complain..too much) But none the less, if you try to screw them, they will get you in the end.

That makes no sense. The Army doesn't go by school year when they pay for that one ADT. They go by fiscal year. I am expected to do an ADT this *fiscal* year (2005-2006). If they are going to pay me to do a school ADT where I do nothing, why can't I do a rotation?

I had the understanding that the Army pays for one ADT per fiscal year (which starts in OCTOBER). My ADT for 2004-2005 was OBC this summer. My next ADT will be for 2005-2006 and will either be school orders or whatever early 3rd year rotation I can work out. My last 2 ADT's will likely be back to back rotations late third year/early 4th year. Those two rotations will fall in the same fiscal year, which is technically against the rules, but the Army allows that because otherwise, no medical student would be able to get their two ADT rotations in before the Oct 15 deadline for residency applications.

And I'm not trying to screw the military. Give me a break. I just figured if they are going to pay me to do nothing, I might as well take advantage of the opportunity to get out there and do something.

During OBC they made it very clear that you can do two ADTs during the summer of your third year. For example, my schools third year ends in may but the Armys third year doesn't end until August. I am allowed two ADTs during the summer which is my army third year. I regards to your original question I know that some of my classmates did their first rotation, a family practice rotation with the Army between second and third year. This was considered a second year rotation even though it counted for a third year rotation by our school.

I hope this doesn't confuse the Shiz out of you
:scared: 😕 😎

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. I want to take my boards this June, get a rotation in (in lieu of just doing school orders) before the fiscal year ends in October, and then do my "two" 3rd year rotations in the summer/early fall of 2007 before I have to apply for residencies by Oct 15 of 2007. Make sense???

Now that we have that cleared up, does anyone that has done this have an opinion of any of those early third year rotation sites?

I have a good friend who did a family med rotation at Fort Hood. He thought it was good. 😎

If you have HPSP start in the Jan of your 3rd year, can you squeeze out 2 ADT with them..or just one?

I would email your HPSP advisor and ask. You should be able to do 2 ADT's before you hit October of your 4th year because that's when your residency applications will be due. They want you to have done your rotations and interviews by then.
