Art & Music as GE's = Bad ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I plan on taking ONLY art and music next semester. Just because a subject isn't academically rigorous doesn't make it a less valuable educational and personal experience.

I know you want to get into med school, but don't forget that this is YOUR education. If you want to take music, take it. If you never take a hard class, that could be a problem, but anyone who thinks less of you for taking an "easy" class because you are interested in the topic is just being a jerk.

i want to address a pet peeve of mine from my college days.
just because it's an art or music class, does not mean the class is EASY! as an art major, i would get so much crap from ppl who were science or business majors telling me that all i do is "draw all day."
art majors do a lot of hard work. i think i've gotten more sleep studying for premed requisite exams than preparing for my art/design critiques. you stay up all night, agonizing over something, get exacto cuts on your hands, and god forbid if your mac crashes at 3am or something else happens to your project and you have to START OVER something that took you weeks.

i've also seen people struggle so much in an art class, not able to overcome their lack of talent/ability etc and end up with a mediocre grade. they probably thought they'd get an easy A when they registered. it's not so easy to get an A in art class, most artists/instructors have high standards and only give out a 2-5 A's to a class of 30 students. at least at my undergrad.

Well said, bubbleyum. Studio art classes are an obscene amount of work at my school. That's why if I take Drawing 1, I'm sure as heck taking it pass/fail!

I majored in music, and I've already had three acceptances, so I wouldn't worry that taking art and music classes will hurt your chances.

I agree! my art classes definitely required several all-nighters!

I got degrees in psychology and in philosophy. I took art history, history, and foreign language classes as electives. The only natural science classes I took were my pre-med requirements. And I got in.

My undergrad school has many many dozens of kids getting bio degrees who all want to be MDs or DMDs. Half of them hate science, and it shows in their grades. I keep wanting to tell them: pick something & be good at it. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do well in the pre-med requirements; just be good at whatever you do, and your transcript will speak for itself.
That said, if you avoid hard classes and are trying to breeze your way through school without much academic work, THAT will speak for itself too!
Take the class & enjoy it! One fun class won't affect your chances of being an MD. If you don't get in, it would be for other reasons entirely, than that you took a fun class one semester!

Best of luck! 🙂
