I want to eventually become a play therapist. As a LCSW can I choose to only work with children (12 and under)?

Not to be flippant - BUT the only problem with that plan is that 12 and unders have parents and guardians who are not in the age range that you want to work with :)

So as long as you are not avoiding a particular population because of your own unease - yes - there are COUNSELORS who specialize after having a thorough and complete training in lots of different placements - LCSWs are likely doing the same thing.

The question your post raises for me - is how do you know without having done the work/education/training that you only want to do play therapy and only with 12 and under?

I would suggest keeping an open mind that allows both depth (play therapy and children) and breadth (working with lots of different people/places/pathologies).

Have you considered becoming a school counselor? or school psychologist? both of which can easily specialize in younger children and offer play therapy.
