Not to be flippant - BUT the only problem with that plan is that 12 and unders have parents and guardians who are not in the age range that you want to work with
So as long as you are not avoiding a particular population because of your own unease - yes - there are COUNSELORS who specialize after having a thorough and complete training in lots of different placements - LCSWs are likely doing the same thing.
The question your post raises for me - is how do you know without having done the work/education/training that you only want to do play therapy and only with 12 and under?
I would suggest keeping an open mind that allows both depth (play therapy and children) and breadth (working with lots of different people/places/pathologies).
Have you considered becoming a school counselor? or school psychologist? both of which can easily specialize in younger children and offer play therapy.
