  1. Attending Physician
With the topic of asian acceptance in med school becoming a popular topic recently, I thought it might be interesting to see how many of Asian-American SDNers fit the bill for generic stereotypes and "overachievement," and how some of us diverge. Just list GPA, MCATs and ECs, no need for honors or leadership positions (assumed)unless it's something tremendous like Fulbright or whatever.

I'll start:
Current Senior GPA: 3.67
Majors: Biology, Psychology and Classics

MCAT: Will take in April

ECs: Crew (rowing) 4 yrs, bench research 1.5 yrs, tutoring for AOL and for Upward Bound 4 yrs, school paper 3 yrs, National and Ohio Senior Classical Leagues (for latin/greek scholars) 4 yrs, campus classics club 2 yrs, undergrad faculty committee 1 yr, Junior Year Abroad in Ireland.

(mortar board & golden key 3 yrs, but participation minimal since the clubs don't do much).

Junior GPA: 3.85
Majors: Bio and Nutrition Sciences
MCAT: this April
ECs: play for Baylor Men's Soccer Team, Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society, volunteer work at a local hospital and free clinic, summer abroad in Spain

I can't believe I'm engaging in this thread! All of my relatives are from highly Asian populated areas: DC, LA, TX. However, I'm in the middle of PA and I'm really glad since I don't associate with too many Asians 🙂 I'm not saying it's bad or anything, but I'm glad my parents are a bit more open-minded about situations (academics, relationships, etc.)

Anyway, here are my vitals. I'm just average 🙂

UGRAD: JHU '01
GPA: 3.56 (3.42 sci, 3.9 AO)
MCAT: 30R (9v,11p,10b)

ECs: Varsity athlete, Inner-city youth tutor, Campus tourguide, Chem research assistant, Research tech (2 different positions), Lab tech, RA, GED tutor, Camp counselor for mentally and physically challenged children, Sales associate, Nanny.

Most of my ECs are typical, some aren't.

you're lists of EC's are pretty rediculous. i hope that you had time to sleep

GPA: 3.97
MCAT: 37N (11v 13p 13b)

ECs: 4 yrs. research with publications, volunteer teacher for elementary school, tutor for other college students, EMT stuff, blah blah blah

I actually don't think a lot of asians are overachievers...but those who are take it to sick, extreme levels (you know, violinists who practice 8 hours/day in high school) and perpetuate the stereotype, good or bad.

I am an Asian Canadian. 🙂

BCPM: 3.80
Overall: 3.85

V6 PS13 BS10 M (yeah.. '6')

Bio major.
Research with publications.
Have been playing an instrument for 16 years.(I am talking about almost everyday, non-stop).
Won many competitions and played solo with various philharmonics worldwide.

I had no time for other ECs. 🙂

Current Junior GPA: 3.988, science GPA 4.0

Major: Biomedical Engineering, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.

Took the August MCAT: 33Q: 9,14,10 (i hate verbal)

E.C's: AIDS center volunteer for 3 years, student tutor for 3 years, assistant x-ray technician for 2 years, and 1 year research w/awaiting publication. Will research a similar field at the NIH this summer for ten weeks as well. Play a little guitar and keyboard on the side.

I think asians usually have great P.S. scores to make up for their verbal inadequacies. maybe our minds just work in a different way?

I plan on applying M.D./Ph.D.--dont know how good my chances are, but doesn't hurt to try.

Wow, hmm interesting. Although number stats differ, it doesn't seem like everyone's all that different from each other in terms of ECs. most everyone has some mainstream ECs, and there are only a couple "different" activities. I don't know what that means really, just interesting. And I hope no one feels "inadequate" because you really shouldn't. Although we all tend to be grouped together, everyone's gone through different experiences and this thread should not be used in any way to judge others or judge yourself.

BTW, LOL to the practice 8 hours a day thing. I actually used to do that a bit in HS, but definitely not in college. A big HA to the parental institution that tried to enhance my well-being by forcing that kind of thing on me. Actually, I'm completely not active musically as an undergrad...wow, total reversal of my hs years.

Music was never a love for me. I'm one of the lazier kind. Huge soccer fan through my early childhood, probably because i grew up in the Middle East 🙂 , and then encountered my true love, cricket. Guess i was too busy being a dirty street kid than develop an interest in the other stuff. 😎

Hope I'm not too late...but here it goes

major: Biology (graduated from the University of Hawaii)
gpa: 3.91 (non-sci 4.0, sci ~ 3.8)
mcat: 11V, 10, 10 R (first time 25M!!!)
EC's: volunteer at a local emergency department, 1 year of lab research, sunday school teacher for a local church, volunteer at an elderly day care facility

Shoot...times like this I wish I was Asian. I want to contribute. Good stats and EC's everyone...Congrats.

JUST SO PEOPLE KNOW...THE TITLE OF THE POST IS ASIAN AMERICAN....SO ALL YOU PEOPLE THAT BELONG TO OTHER ETHNIC GROUPS SHOULDN'T POST HERE...

that also includes me 😀

Hmm. Seeing as the the title says, "ASIAN AMERICAN STATS," in ALL CAPS, I wonder how anyone could've missed that & accidentally posted anyway? {Staring at Watcha} 😀

Doctora Foxy, thanks for welcoming me. I've only been accepted to one school - MCG, and am interview at Tulane this week. I applied to 10 others, but for the most part have been getting pre-interview rejections. I'm pulling the rest of my apps today if nothing exciting comes in the mail. 😛

Whoa Doggiepan, I thought I had stellar EC's but you really take the cake. Where else have you applied to medical school b/sides Tulane and MCG? Other than that, I find it to be total bull$#!@ that so many medical school are not giving you a chance with all your EC's. To me it seems that the med school guage your prospects of a clinician by how well you know some s$%$ like the Nernst Equation or Gauss' Law instead of focusing on necessary qualities such as compassion, leadership, and exposure to the medical field.
I have met many unsavory characters in the eight-year medical program at my school, where students are accepted from high school and assured a spot in med school. These people may be rocking the organic chem tests left and right, but I could never imagine them in a clinical situation. Though medical schools profess to desiring more "well rounded" students, it seems to be a blatant lie to me.
I empathize with your situation because I am in your same situation. I dont have a 4.0 GPA nor do I expect to get a 40+ on my MCATs. This may throw me out of the running for a spot in some of some school, but c'est la vie. They want their lab rats.

Here goes nothing...

Hey Doggiepan, don't pull your other apps if you still have a chance at schools you would be happier at! You've spent so much time doing secondaries, why pull them for no reason?
