stereotypical asian male numbers. i wish my sections were less disparate. i've heard that those with under 10V (esp asians) can find trouble in the admissions game. i'm concerned that i'll be pigeonholed into the "asian male" pile.

thoughts?

I was in that category too. Just too tired after PS to be alert during Verbal, but lunch snapped me back into shape. Plus I am (was) an engineer and an asian male.

You'll be fine... just do a good job at your interviews. Maintain smooth flowing conversation, be able to transition easily from talking about scientific/technical stuff to conversations about life and all of its travails. With an asian sounding name, if (in conversation) you present yourself as a good communicator of the (american) english language, that will place less emphasis on your verbal score.

I mean, you got a 36 on your mcat, plus you're an engineer meaning you have professional skills as well as academic quals. Good luck!

Dude you got a 36 on the MCAT! 99th Percentile! Stop worrying! You might not get into Harvard but you are going to med school!

🙂

i got similar scores as you - in fact i got a 9 in verbal too. no worries, you're up for probably scholarships from your in state school unless you're in CA, then the UC's might not give out scholarships...but nevertheless you're most likely in - just don't cuss in the interview =)

oh, and yes i'm an asian male who's an engineer

Dude, I envy you!

I spoke with an admissions person at Wash U who said that the 9 might be a concern for some schools, only because of the discrepancy (but not them). However, it shouldn't keep you from getting secondaries or interviews. You're not screwed, although obviously it would have been nice to be in double figures. Don't worry too much about it.

Your fine?.most schools cutoff is about 7 or 8 for an MCAT section?..no worries. You got a friggen 36Q!

I had a friend who had the exact same score as you (and the exact same breakdown), and he was pretty worried about it as well. Ultimately, he didn't hear anything about it, got interviews at all the schools he applied to, and is going to Stanford.

Dunno what my comment really says, but I don't think it's going to screw you over...

or this thread is from an attention *****, or someone insecure about himself...most people with really good grades and test scores are.

A 9V is definitely acceptable at many schools, no matter how you slice it, and with a 13/14, you should be fine, based on the MCAT alone.

I really don't think that is fair - he might have different goals from you. For some applicants, not getting into a top ten school is a failure for them, whereas for others getting into any medical school is what matters. Dismissing one group as elitist, or the other as irrelevant is not so helpful.

i never said he was elitist. having a high MCAT score is very admirable, in fact - i'm sure many people envy his score.

anyone that thinks not getting into a top ten school = failure has some messed up thinking and in other words is insecure. that's not being elitist necessarily.

come on, seriously if you knew you were in the top 97 percentile why the hell would you worry? why would you post it here for peer review...as if we're all experts? it's all just a needed pat on the back for security.

by the way, in all sincerity, a 36Q is excellent and the OP shouldn't worry about the schools he gets into, he should worry about how to spend his wonderful summer before med school.

I know someone who got a 9 on the verbal, but similarly kicked the sciences' a$$es and got into WashU. I wouldn't worry.

You are an asian male.... you deserve to be in the asian male pile~ lol 🙂 if you weren't one, you probably didn't get that amazing mcat score

And you're turning this fine thread into something ugly... To the OP, you'll be fine 👍
