In-person office hour visits are a lot harder now. How should I send an email asking for a letter of recommendation for next cycle application? Should I be straightforward and ask, or should I ask for a zoom meeting to discuss a potential letter?

A lot of professors are having online office hours. Asking face to face is always better than email.

Asked 2 of my professors over email last spring. If you know they will write you a good letter, I don't think it's a big deal. The reason you'd wanna ask in person is to rate their enthusiasm for your request—something you can't observe over email.
