I am a pre-med student in the midst of choosing a major. I have a disadvantage that I created about 6 years ago when I was 18. I ruined my GPA. Now that I have decided what it is that I want to do (MEDICINE!!), I have earned mostly As and some Bs. Now, do you recommend that I choose Option (1) Psychology as my major and get mostly A's to help my GPA and finish my required pre-med courses (1yr each of Bio, Chem, OChem, Physics), option (2) Psychology as my major, finish my required pre-med courses and take Genetics, Population Biology and Cell Biology or option (3) which is take up Biology as my major, have a lower GPA but have taken all the upper division Biology, Physiology, Anatomy, etc.

Which will help the most in my admission to medical school (as a result of better GPA & MCAT score)

Your advice is so truly appreciated!

Thanking you in advance...

my take - maximize your GPA no matter what. yeah yeah yeah, you'll get a bunch of people saying either:
1) take advanced bio classes because med schools like to see that
2) take advanced bio classes cuz they'll help in med school
IMHO that applies to students who's GPA is already pretty good. for all others though - maximize your GPA

Switch to mathematics or statistics. Check out the stats on the MCAT scores "Summary Data on the Combined April / August 2002 MCAT (PDF, 1 page - 31KB)" at the following link:

Sure you want to do biology? 🙂

No matter what your major, you don't have to settle for poor grades. True, some majors are more difficult, but as long as you pull in a 3.6 - 3.7, you'll be fine and you may be at an advantage since they can tell if you've challenged yourself or not, just by looking at what courses you've had.

The easy route is not usually the best route. Good luck with whatever you choose.

😉

make your own decision. you will get the best grades in courses that you enjoy.

Try English or Literature. This will also help improve your MCAT scores.
GOOD LUCK
