I'm a first year and really want to go into EM. I've spent plenty of time in the ED, and recently asked my EM mentor about doing research. Apparently NO ONE in EM is doing research at my school. Which really sucks!

However, I still WANT to do research that will somehow benefit me in the long run (educationally and resume). Bench work - not a big fan of.

Since my mentor left me at a dead end, does anyone have any advice? Should I talk to someone in IM? Where do I begin?

I see you go to Texas Tech although I don't know which campus. I imagine that BKN could be a very helpful resource for directing you toward some EM research with in the TT system. You might try dropping him a note but I bet he'll notice this thread and beat you to it.
