Hi All,

I was just looking for a good book to read for EM. I am currently a third year now and I am pretty much done till fourth year as I have only two light rotations left. I am going to do two EM rotations for fourth year and I want to get a jump on it by reading something useful. I heard Atlas of Emergency Medicine was something good. The price seems quite high, has anyone used this book and what do you think of it. I tried doing a search on it, but it is not mentioned to often here. Thx!

It's essentially a picture book of interesting photos of various diseases. It's a good adjunct to a normal text to help you get an idea of what actual diseases will look like, rather than bland descriptions of them. Makes the information stick in the mind a lot better I think.

That said, like all glossy picture books it's expensive as hell. If you're a poor student, I'd recommend checking it out of the school library instead. It's not generally something you're going to refer back to on a regular basis.

Goody goody goody. I get to disagree with sessamoid! :D

I *love* this book. 100%. It is not just a picture book. It gives a great synopsis of presentation, differential diagnosis, diagnostic tests and clinical pearls. The pictues are awesome (I'm a visual learner.) However, it is a little pricey for med school. HOWEVER, if you are certain you are going to do EM this is an outstanding book. I bought tintinalli and rosen as an intern. Not a "waste" of my money but this book was worth every dollar.

I also used it to study for the inservice. (adjunct with Peer 6)

If you are really poor and just looking for something to read, the clinical pearls of EM or any of the EM books for med students are good. You'll get a good overview.

If youa re looking to build your library, this book is awesome.

The library thing is a great suggestion. I always used to check out books before I bought anything. Sit and read it for a while to find out if you really like it.

Okay, well it's been a while since I looked at the thing. The edition I remember didn't have all that good stuff (or maybe my memory just sucks). Nevertheless, I'm sure it's still expensive as hell for a poor student, so my recommendation to borrow it from the library stands.

My library is whatever I bought in residency, plus whatever's on MDConsult and my PDA.

I've heard nothing but good things about "EM secrets". the last book made was 2003 i believe. I'm reading it currently and think it covers most all of the bases in just enough detail.

Would you recommend reading The Atlas of EM between now & the beginning of my residency to get ahead?

But seriously folks, The Wu Tang Manual is pretty great so far (the first 50 pages).

the atlas is a great book. I highly recommend it. However, again, you have to take a look and figure out if you like the style

I used "Just the Facts in EM" by Cline, Ma, Tinitinalli, etc and did corresponding question chapters in PreTest Self-Assessment and Review: EM by Koenig (in other words, I would readthe GI chapter in Just the Facts and then do the questions from the GI chapter in PreTest, then the Tox chapter, and so on).

As an intern, I am also using PEER VI like Roja. I bought "Emergency Medicine Orals" also but haven't looked into it yet since I won't have to deal with "ABEM General Hospital" in some Chicago hotel for awhile...

On the wish list is Roberts & Hedges and the aforementioned Atlas of EM.
