Ok guys, did any of you think about Minnesota?
they passed a law in August of 2001 creating a mechanism for foreign trained dentists to become licensed there if they decide that your education is equivalent to or higher than that gained in an accredited dental school.
The reason is that they are facing a shortage of dentists there.
I got some info from the board of dentistry there and they have some requirements which are here( this is the actual langauge as i got it from the board):

Foreign-trained dentist licensure considerations
October, 2002

The information provided in this letter is intended for you if you are one of the following:

? Foreign-trained general dentist
? Foreign-trained dental specialist

The Committee has determined that minimal requirements for licensure examination eligibility include the following: (1) that your dental education is equivalent to or greater than that of a dental education provided at a school that is accredited by the American Dental Association?s Commission on Accreditation, (2) that you graduated with at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), (3) that failed courses were passed the second time they were taken, and (4) that you have actively practiced dentistry or have graduated from a dental program within the past five years. You must meet these minimum requirements to be considered for licensure.

The Board of Dentistry has chosen an evaluation service that will assess your education completed at a foreign school. The Credentials Committee of the Board will use the report to determine whether your education is equivalent to an accredited program. Please contact Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc. (ECE) at (414) 289-3400, or www.ece.org and request their Application for Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials. Please submit your completed application form and all requested documents to ECE. On your application, you must request that a subject analysis report be sent directly to the Minnesota Board of Dentistry.

While you are waiting for the subject analysis report to be sent to our Committee, please submit the following documents to our office. These documents will become part of your permanent file with the Board and will not be returned to you. Please note that all photocopies that you send should be certified by a notary public to be true copies of the original documents and have the signature and stamp of the notary public. Photocopies that are not notarized will not be considered by the Committee:

? The document titled ?Affidavit of Applicant? that is included with this letter (please sign before a notary public), and the foreign-trained dentist questionnaire.

? A personal letter, curriculum vitae, or r?sum? that describes what you have been doing professionally since graduation from dental school. Please give specific dates and information.

? Notarized photocopies of proof of actively practicing dentistry within the past five years (tax statements, patient billings, etc.)

? A notarized photocopy of your dental diploma and an original or notarized photocopy of its official translation if it is not in English.

? Notarized photocopies of all diplomas or certificates that you have been awarded for advanced education in dentistry and original or notarized photocopies of official translations when originals are not in English.

? Complete a continuing dental education minimum six hour course in infection control that emphasizes current Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and submit your course completion certificate with the course description, book, and/or handouts. The course must be completed within the five years prior to application. Please contact the Board if you are unsure whether the course you have selected will meet the Committee?s request.

? You may choose to submit additional documents for consideration by the Board. Please have all photocopies notarized as true copies of the original documents. When originals are not in English, please include the original or notarized photocopy of an official translation.

EXAMINATIONS

If you have passed any of the following exams, please submit proof to the Committee. If you have not completed any of these exams, in your personal letter please request the Committee?s permission to take the unfinished exam(s). The Committee is primarily concerned with evaluating your education; if you do not submit the following documents, evaluation of your education will not be delayed. However, proof of passing these exams must be received before your license can be issued.

? A notarized photocopy of your National Board Examination score, Parts I and II. This examination is offered throughout the United States and Canada. For information contact:

? A notarized photocopy of your passing score on the clinical examination administered by either the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS) or the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB). To be accepted for licensure application, CRDTS must be passed within the five years prior to application and WREB must be passed in 2001 and thereafter. For information contact:

? Minnesota Jurisprudence Examination: A notarized photocopy of your passing score on the Minnesota Jurisprudence Examination is required if the exam was passed after April 1, 2002. If you completed the exam prior to April 1, 2002, please indicate in your personal letter the month and the year the examination was passed. If you need to take this exam, you may call the Board at (612) 617-2259 and request that information regarding the Minnesota Jurisprudence Examination be mailed to you.

They are saying that they actually licensed some foreign trained dentists through this process

So I'm really thinking about this option now that most doors are closing....I would also advise you to get the most current info directly from the board as this is still like general guidelines that they may change
Here is the link for the Minnesota Board of Dentistry:

Hey dentoman

Good on you for brining that to our attention. It's encouraging! Have you come across any other state boards that are also allowing foreign graduates to sit the licensure exams with or without supplemental US dental school experience? ie. general dentistry programs

Cheers

the only states that I know of that would give u a shot at licensure without supplemental education are California, Hawaii and Minnesota
If you want to know what each state specific requirements are you sould check the ADA website :
http://www.ada.org/prof/prac/licensure/index.html
on that page check the one that says:
Dentistry in the United States: Information on Education and Licensure

You're my hero Dentoman!!

Arrrgh .... Minnesota. I am not surprise they have a shortage of dentist. Here in California dentists are as plentiful as lawyers.

I will keep prodding my wife to study hard lest we have to move out of silicon valley :)

Nevetheless it's an option, though we may beeline to Kaui before giving the coldest state south of Alaska a second thought.

hi
is minnesota similar in procedure to california,to do parts 1 and 2 then the licensure exam?thats what i can understand from the link.if we do somehow complete everything what if the law changes later which requires graduation from an accrediated dental school?

Well i don't think so. Whatever they say/tell is not 100% true.

Now u wud think how do i know? Becoz i live in MN and had applied immediately after i heard abt it last year.

Their minimum requrement is to do 6 credit course of oral infection control and/or GPR or AEGD in order for one to be eligible for licensing.

So don't be under false impression.

Good luck all u guys out there.

I appreciate ur input zobaer
i'm aware of the infection control requirement but thats a continuing education course and shouldnt be a problem
however i cant see how they are asking for AEGD or GPR coz it's not mentioned anywhere in the info i got from the board
did they actually tell u that they require those?
what happened with you when u applied if u dont mind telling us
thanx for the info in advance.

i got an application frm MN.but i was unable to clear my ndbe p2 and hence did not send the application.i am not sure how long it will take by the time u get a license .Is there any foriegn dentist who got a license in MN thro' this way?

well its great if its true about MN dentoman! thanx for keeping us all updated....its nice to know that people openly tell u these things rather than keep it under wraps till they try it out themselves!!! but i think longterm it might be advisable to do the 2yr dental course- that way u can practice in more states should u need to move. dentoman, could u tell us what u mean by "most doors are closing"? please let us know.....thanx....

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if any of you has applied for licensure in Minnesota as a foreign trained dentist, or perharps you know someone who has. If so, please share your experience with us.

I'm a foreign trained dentist thinking of going this way, since, as some mentioned aboved, there are not may options for us. :(

I've on the Internet trying desperatly to find someone with the Minnesota experience, but so far haven't found anyone willing to share it.

What I would like to know, is what are the actual possibilities of getting licensed? would they ask for more requirements along the way?, how lenghty is it?.

Well, hope someone will help, we really need the advice,
Thanks :)

Hi Meggs,

I tried calling up the Minnesota state board for more information. They told me that every 6 weeks they evaluate the applications and then tell us if we are eligible; so that we can go ahead with the exams etc. for the evaluation they require a subject evaluation report from ECE. They also told me that next evaluation was in May(not sure about the exact date though). If you call them they will send you the required information.

if you are a Foreign Trained Dentist and not a US citiczen, how exactly do you plan on working in the US or even living in the US. As a Canadian it was very difficult to plan on staying in the US permanently.

Hi guys

I started a new thread about Minnesota, so it will be more on the top of the topics list, ;)

Check it out, so we can continue chating about such an interesting and promising topic. :D

bye

Hi,

Recently i applied for minnesota dental board . For getting a license in MN one has to clear WREB/CRDTS that one can give only after getting a letter from MN Board which says they have given a permission to take this exam.

Did they granted you that that permission letter? How hard was it to get trough that process? A couple friends of mine are interested in that option and they wonder if it will be worth all that stress and money. If you can let me know are be really grateful, thank you.

Hi everyone,
I applied to Minnesota too,in February. Shortly thereafter I was notified that my file will be considered on May 28th and they are going to let me know in June first week whether I'll be allowed to take the WREB. Worth a shot if you fit their list of eligibility requirements (includes 18month work experience in the last 3 years) and don't mind the cold!

HI shelly,

Do You know somebody who has taken WREB before..
Is there any coaching classes for this.

Bye

Is there a "ignoring" smiley???

Very very difficult and lenghty process.
one more thing dont forget to take a look at weather over there

I was talking with a friend and she told me that only 8 applicants pass the process since 2008 because the mismatchings on the University sillabus, most of the schools in the world don’t have the same amount of hours than the minesota board requirements, also because there is no english writting course on the curriculum.

It seems impossible to a Brazilian dentist to be accepted there.
