Hi all,

I am a pre-pod student hoping to apply for the cycle of 2013, though I won’t be applying until I finish my MCAT (in January). If you have the time, can you tell me what your personal thoughts about Kent State/OCPM (information that cannot be found on the school site)? What are the pros? What are the cons? Living expenses, residency opportunities, level of difficulty in first year classes, etc.

Thanks a ton!!

Or you can... scan through old threads, figure out who attended OCPM and directly contact them through SDN. It's not too difficult to get in contact with students. I know when I was prepod, Anklebreaker and bobdolerson both helped me a lot with info about their schools and programs offered.

Honestly there's not that much of a different now that it's affiliated with Kent state. We have a grad student TA in our anatomy lab who's getting her PHD at Kent and she's really nice and helpful. They're getting rid of the Independence Police on campus and wanna hire a rent a cop type of position instead. If one fails out then maybe their credits can transfer and they can go do a masters in exercise physiology at Kent or something MAYBE. It takes a little longer to get refund checks now. However one major difference is that now that ocpm is no longer an independent institution Kent will be keeping a close eye on them like a hawk and will be watching everything they do. So if any questionable events happen professor wise or anything wise Kent will now be there to hound them.

Yes I am a student here. You were actually a student ambassador at my Scholl interview lol 🙂 The reason they'll keep a close eye is because now it is in Kent's name and thus Kent's reputation. I believe that your school is Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at RFUMS. Since we're not OCPM at Kent state and are actually KSUCPM Kent will be more involved with us. Especially since this is the first year there might be a lot of tweeks here and there. Btw I loved Scholl and had a hard time deciding which school to come to.

Couple of things to mention. We do have a few grad student TA's (Yes they are incredibly friendly), but the majority of the TA's ARE second and third year students. There is a HUGE push by students and faculty (who've grown to love Independence police) to keep the police. According to the administration, it's a bureaucratic issue since Kent has its own police force. I'm confident it will be solved shortly. Kent will not be watching like a hawk... Our school has insisted that one of the caveats of this merger was that the podiatry school have significant autonomy from KSU. Putting the college name before or after the university's name is not a factor in how independent they are.

One of the reasons why OCPM was trying to merge with another institution( besides money factors) is because they were actually worried about losing accreditation due to attrition rates, and other factors. Talk to Teri Novak and fourth years about it they've been here longer than we have. I never said that the grad student from Kent was our only TA. One thing to mention however is if someone fails here it really is on their own merit. The school provides us with so many resources like tutors and review groups that if one fails out it simple is because they didn't study hard enough. Our academic coordinator even mails out old exams and study guides. Things like these make me believe that maybe KSUCPM actually does care about their students.

I only mentioned the other students because you were addressing a few changes that occurred with the merger. Just clearing up any possible misconceptions that maybe we're all of a sudden being taught by grad students. I don't know of the validity of this possible accreditation loss. The last I've heard of this occurred when Carla mentioned that the school is absolutely not losing accreditation. If this is true, it is very concerning, and I will definitely be following up with the appropriate channels for more information.

We're nowhere near losing accreditation, but the school really wanted to merge with a bigger name institution for more legitimacy. We even had an offer from Cleveland Clinic, we could have been The Cleveland Clinic College of Podiatric Medicine!!! But Kent was paying more.

hmmm thats too bad it wasnt the CC...

Not to stir the pot, or freak anyone out... but what happens to the students when a school loses accreditation?

Is their degree now worthless?

Are students forced to try and transfer to a new institution?

I don't know but I doubt any of the nine schools will ever have to face this.

A. Don't believe a good majority of what the faculty tells you. Take it into your own hands to find out what may or may not be true. That is one of the actual values of SDN. I think people are honest when messaged.

B. Talking to recent grads and current 4th years while out on rotations, nearly every person rolls their eyes at this topic and had minimally positive things to say.

C. None of this means it is not right for some students. It is your education. Learn to discern what is the truth and what is not. You are responsible for your own actions

care to explain B a little more?
