I guys,

I just got an interview invite from an Australian school and now that I actually have it, I am sort of concerned because I have also applied all over the US and am still sorting thru secondaries and waiting for amcas to give the final ok on my verification (don't ask ... 🙄 ).

I don't think I can drop everything and fly out to California, and besides I am trying to save money for my US interviews. I thought they would be having interviews here on the east coast (I'm in NY).

Maybe I should have waited and applied for next year, if I didn't get in this year ...

Any ideas ?

Hmmm...

unless you have a preference for the Aussie schools, I assume you are applying to them as a "back-up". Unfortunately, US admissions being what they are you may find yourself holding an Aussie admission and being on a US waitlist (or have no information) when the times comes to start med school in Australia.

Then what are you going to do? Several students have found themselves in the same situation and unfortunately, some have elected to start at an Aussie school only to drop out when a spot in a US school opened up. Great for them, but it essentially meant that someone else didn't get their Aussie spot because it was too late to fill it when they left.

IMHO, you should withdraw your Aussie application if you prefer a US school and have some reasonable expectation that you might get into a US school. Apply next year if you don't get in.

Hey Paws!
I would like to switch with you as well. If you are serious about this, please email me at [email protected]

Perhaps we can work something out.

Once you have an Aussie acceptance, defer your admission for one year to see if you get in in the U.S. Or pay the deposit for this year and wait till December before making the call.

Also you could apply early decision in May for the following February to Flinders.

I don't know which school you are interviewing for, but my letter from USyd says that you can't defer except in the case of serious illness or "misadventure" that couldn't have been forseen at the time of application. Maybe skypilot knows of schools that let you defer, but just something to think about. I agree with Kim Cox that you shouldn't accept a spot and then drop out to go to a US school, leaving someone else who really wanted to go to Oz without a spot.

Good luck.

Thanks guys,

these are good thoughts to think about. I realize now of course, that I should have waited until next year to see if I didn't get into a US school.

Well, hindsight is 20/20 and since this is the first time (and only, I hope) I have applied to medical school I guess I didn't quite have the right angle for how to juggle all these different programs and schools.

I think too, that some of the schools are very strict about no deferrals for a year, which would be ideal to do, and I honestly don't want to take a place from someone else.

Kimberli is right and her judgement is sound; I think I am going to have to suck it up, and decline my place to interview with this particular school. I have applied to alot of US schools and reasonably enough, I would like to give them my best shot first. And Skypilot, I agree about waiting and applying to Flinders next year.
