What is a good # of programs to apply to for an average student in CA?

Are you currently attending a CA school?

If so, which? In regards to residency application, the competitiveness of an "average" UCSF student is a lot different, than, say, an "average" Loma Linda student.

Are you only willing to consider CA and no where else? or do you just prefer CA residency but would accept something else if you dont end up matching there?

I'm applying to 10-12. i'm from out of state but originial CA guy. Top 25 med school, if that helps.
