Hello all,

just a general question:
do I have any chance of getting accepted with a BA from Israel (Technion)?
Does the fact that it's not a domestic BA lower my chances in general, or
is it a question of GPA?

I'm talking about a BA in Molecular Biochemistry, that includes courses in
calculus, advanced phys, chem and bio + labs (including advanced or. chem,
biochem and molec. bio. of course).

Thanks and good luck,
Anna

Hey Anna,

As long as you took the pre-med requirements I see no reason why you can't gain acceptance, especially with a BA from the Technion.
Your Israeli GPA (100 point scale) can easily be converted by the adcoms.
If you are missing any pre-med courses you may be asked to complete a post bac year, but I am pretty sure that you're good to go. Of course there's the MCAT. No way around that.
The other issue, is applying as a foreign student. That in itself is difficult and some schools will want you to pay all 4 years of tuition up front.

If you have any further questions you can PM me.

Yes, it will be a problem for most schools in the U.S. because they require that the premedical classes (chemistry, biology, physics, and organic chemistry) are completed here and that you have completed 60-90 credits in the U.S. overall. There are one or two medical schools like GW in D.C. that enroll foreign students with the intent of returning to their country of origin but, for those students, there is a contractual agreement beween GW and the overseas nation which pays the cost of tuition in full.

It may not seem fair, but don't let that deter you; you still have options. Foreign undergraduate degree grades are not verified on the AMCAS form that you submit to U.S. medical schools so there will be no conversion. Most U.S. schools want around 90 credits, completed in the U.S. Some ask for 60 credits and those usually must include the prerequisite subjects named above. For you, there are a few options: enter a two-year formal poctbac program in the U.S. to get the prereq's and obtain a U.S. GPA. You should contact schools you wish to apply to right now and ask them for their frank opinion. I have given information on the general consensus, but one or two schools might present other options for you. Failing that, check out my previous posts on this subject. It can be done. Good luck!
